Bow hunting the Book Cliffs?

Hi Guys, I like many other newbies to this site am looking to gain some knowledge about a long distant hunting area. My father and I drew the Book Cliffs for deer this year. We are experienced bow hunters but have rarely pursued Mulleys.

We are from Oregon and have 2 weeks to dedicate to this hunt. Where. What I am hoping to gain from your knowledge is a good place to start. We love to hunt hard and are not apposed to packing in for a few days if that is what it takes.
Next is when. I have 2 weeks and a day to work with. Should we show up a few days early and scout or start when the season has already started to maximize our opportunity? Or even come the last two weeks of the season.

Our trophy goal are to have a great time together as always and enjoy what God has created. We are treating this like a once in a lifetime hunt. Sure we would love to kill a 180 class deer but a couple respectable 4 points and the memories will do us just fine.

I hope to return the favor and Thank you in advance for any help! =D> updated

congrats. how many points did it take you to draw. I have been putting in for the bookcliffs as well. I have not hunted there but it seems like it would be a good archery hunt.

I have not hunted the Book Cliffs, so can't help much on where to go. But this should be a blast and a fun hunt for you guys. Deer numbers a VERY high there and you should see lots of bucks and have opportunity at some respectable bucks for sure. Best of luck to you guys, hopefully someone can chime in that knows the area.

don't worry about seeing bucks at the book Cliffs your trouble will be not shooting the first one you see.

That is going to be a big change to a couple Oregon hunters. We are hard core elk hunters and deer are usually pretty secondary for us. I put some time into our late deer hunt for black-tail. We have been playing the points game for years and looking forward to something new and here it is! :)
I have always dreamed of hunting a mule deer with my bow. I hunted a mule deer one time with a rifle in the Snake River unit about 15 years ago and shot a small 4 point. I passed him 3 times and finally figured out he was a good as it gets.

I have been studying maps and reading all I can of the older post on the site to gain some knowledge. We have one Utah connection with a guy that lives there that has hunted with us in Idaho for elk. He is going to try and help out.

Thanks for responding, you ever want to hunt elk in Oregon or a black-tailed deer I would be willing to tell you all I know :))

You shouldn't have any problem finding bucks......finding a real 180" buck is going to be tough, IMO. There just isn't a lot of them.....beyond popular belief (there are a few exceptions). If you're happy with a 20-24" wide / 135-160" net type buck, you'll have a good time hunting and seeing that caliber of buck. The Book Cliffs is a great opportunity type archery hunt with a lot of deer......but it's not a true trophy unit anymore, IMO.

Congrats on the tag.......I've put in for it and scouted it as well.......a fun type hunt for bowhunters. Just set realistic goals.

Thanks BOHNTR, All I really expect is a good time. A animal is a bonus for me. I really want to get my dad on film taking a buck. And if there is as many deer as everyone says it should be a blast :thumb .
Do you think it would be a good idea to come a few day before the season starts? I have two weeks to spend on this hunt. Or maybe come the last two weeks of the season?

If (when) I get drawn....I'm heading up a few days before to check on deer just prior to the hunt......then hunt as long as I can stay (usually about 10 days). Opening weekend will have some folks.....mostly road hunting from what I've heard......then it thins out mid-week.

I just got my Book Cliffs archery tag in the mail yesterday. I just ordered some maps today and am just starting my research. I'm going to plan on hunting the opener for a week. I would like to hunt them in their summer mode and velvet hopefully. This will be my first archery mule deer hunt. Good luck to you and your father! :thumb

Thanks!! same to you. Where did you order maps? I have gotten Mytop.com maps before and they are awesome but spendy. Let me know how you do scouting.

Hey guys, I just wanted to say thank you for all the help I have been getting from the great members of MuleyMadness. I am amazed of the quality of people willing to help a fellow hunter out. :not-worthy :not-worthy Especially Camodup and Jeff. :thumb It will not be forgotten.

i live within an hour of some good book cliff areas but have yet to draw out so i cant tell you a whole lot but a few points that i should mention are that in the first 10 days it will get hit hard, after that people are usually out of vacation or go home to lick their wounds. If you can get up there early find the bucks you want and can put a stalk together without issues then you will be fine, but if you wait till day 11 or later alot of animals will have moved due to the number of hunters. just some food for thought.

Thanks for the advise. That has been my biggest question. When to go. Do you go late and avoid crowds and hunt pushed deer, or go early and fight the mass of people?

I have hunted the book Cliffs many times before it closed and have drawn once since it closed, I have also been out to help others a few times. I would go for the opening of the hunt, after 4 or 5 days alot of people will begin to leave, if you don't have time to scout I would head down a few days early, as previously said most people road hunt and never get far from the roads. you can shot a 140-150 class bucks from the roads with some luck. The books are steep and deep so if you plan on hiking(which I would recommend) plan on packing the deer out. There are deer everywhere out there so you can't not find deer. I would start near the divide road and hunt from there focusing on the three pines area, the black saddle area, even out towards McCooks ridge, the year I drew some of the biggest deer we saw were in the Monument Ridge area but that area seems to be hit and miss some years. PM me if you have more questions I can get into much more detail if needed.

Thanks bow hunter! No, we are not the road hunter types anyway. I understand we will obviously be doing some driving around checking areas. My plan is as you suggested to get there 2 day before season to have a little scouting time. We have through the Labor Day weekend to hunt.

I really appreciate the info and will PM you with some more questions.

You are welcome.

I just don't want what happend to a buddy at work happen to you.

He had a muzzle loader tag for that unit a few years ago and within a few hours of his hunt starting he saw the best buck of his whole hunt and he passed on it because he hadn't had the time to scout and people were telling how great the bucks are out there. He still got a really nice buck but he said that it didn't hold a candle to the one that he passed up.

Hope that you have an awesome hunt here in a few weeks and we will be wait for the pictures to start rolling in.

Where is the Divide Rd.? Is it at the south end of Seep Ridge, running east/west? How about local meat processors are there some in Green River?

Here is a post that I pulled out of the link that I put up earlier.

Since I live in Vernal, the way I always go is by way of the Seep Ridge Road. If you're coming from Salt Lake, about 15 miles past Roosevelt you will turn south toward Ouray. Stay on that road past pelican lake, past Ouray, over the green and white rivers and keep going. Once the pavement ends the road from there is generally known as the Seep Ridge Road (and is often very bumpy). Follow it all the way to the divide. At the divide, the road divides. Head west to get to Winter Ridge, Moon Ridge, Steer Ridge, etc. East will take you to Rat Hole and Colorado. You can expect a 2 to 2 1/2 hour drive from Roosevelt to the divide.

Of course, coming from Salt Lake it might be faster to go through Green River and up Hay Canyon. Hay Canyon meets the divide road right at Winter Ridge. I've never been that way though, so I couldn't tell you any more than that.

From looking at the maps it looks like the GPS numbers for the spot you're looking for are.

39N 27' 23.30" 109W 16' 46.58"

Hope this helps.

Tyewire,

That would be great let me know what you find out. Are you going to be coming in from the North or the South?
0
Tyewire
We have been recommended to come in from the North, but I think we will wander out the South when we need fuel and see how that is also.

Sounds like it is sixes either way.

I'm coming in from the south. It sounds like a lot less gravel road to travel. I know Fruita or Loma Colorado has gas. There are a few meat processors in Grand Junction as well. I used D&M meats last year in Grand Junction and I was happy with their processing.

Anybody know of a processor in Green River?

Thanks for the info. I am still waiting on a phone call from a local over there. Should hear from him this week. You got me thinking about coming in from the South as well. :-k

congrads on the tags u can expect to see alot of deer for sure not a ton of big ones but they are there. alot of the areas that ppl have said are good but like a few have also said u have to get off the roads and if u go early hunt high there are alot of young bucks out there that are nice 3-4 points but only a couple years old so if u can i would hold out for an older class buck. i had 2 good friends draw the rifle tags last year n they took 170 class deer but they hunted there buts off also find a good hidin water source good luck

Good Luck and have a ton of fun.

Wish that I didn't have over two months to wait for my hunt to begin.

Ya that wait does suck. BUT! with that Henry's tag in your pocket things are a little better.

Good luck to you also.

Well my hunt is over. It was a really cool experience. I saw a lot of bucks. Most right off the road. The very first buck I saw was the best I saw, probably an easy 170 class 4X4. I saw some other nice bucks but then something happened and I went after an average 4X4. I guess not having shot a muley with my bow I got a little excited. I still had a great time and am truly happy with the deer I took. Next time I'll hold out a little longer. The first photo shows the first 3 deer I saw. The one to the right was the biggest deer I saw. I hunted him and blew it. I looked for him again, multiple times, but could not relocate him.

Well I'm Back!!
First off I want to thank all the people who helped me out on this great site. =D> All info was useful and appreciated.

We had a fantastic trip. Saw more deer that I have ever dreamed of seeing in any hunting trip here in Oregon and the Books are beautiful. 10sign:

We scouted for a day and half and decided on the west side of the unit. We like everyone else saw all the nice buck along the road but decided to hunt on foot away from other hunters and vehicles. Don't get me wrong, I would never pass up a gift buck on the way back to camp, just not what we are used to doing. lol

We hunted hard everyday with 5 to 10 miles a day on our feet. We snuck on bucks 3 and sometimes 4 times a day. Mule deer are tough #-o

My cry in your beer story happened Friday. Got in the middle of 16 bucks and had the one of my dreams 30 yards broadside. Drew my bow, and the arrow fell to the ground. Not once but 3 times ](*,) . The lesson of the story is draw all your arrows with broad heads to make sure you have no problems. The blade was 90 to the riser and hooked my felt patch on the way up, thus pulling the arrow off the string. This never happened with my practice broad heads FYI. He was the widest buck of the trip and in my non expert opinion would go close to 180 and 30".

With only a few days left in the trip I took this great buck. Not a monster in most peoples eyes but, he is to me. He helped ease the pain a little of the day before.

We also meet some real nice people from Utah that represented the state well. Thank you to them as well.

As for my dad, he missed a real nice buck but has always taught me that a successful trip does not always end with a kill. He was happy and satisfied with the trip and so was I.

We left a few days early because of the severe thunderstorms. WOW!! Those were impressive.

I'm glad to see that everybody had a good time on their hunts. As long as you are happy the bucks that you harvested then thats all that matters. They look like some fine bucks to me and they are by and far alot larger than anything I have ever harvested.

Hoping to change that in just 51 days 20 hours and 58 minutes.

But whos counting right?

Hey Tyewire,
Glad to hear things worked out for you and your dad. Great Buck! It looks like re-locating your camp to the west worked! It was Brad's and my pleasure meeting you guys on the mountain. Did you ever encounter any bears? Best of luck in the future..

Hey F-Stop! Yes it did work. No bears, I think after a week and a half we smelt like a couple of boar bear ourselves and they stayed away lol . It was our pleasure meeting you guys! Thanks again for the trip to town and the ice. I look forward to seeing you hunt footage. Post us some pics of your buck! I talked with the guide friend over there and they killed that non-tip. Green score of 227!

Best of luck to you! If you ever get the itch to hunt or fish over here, or for any reason need a place to stay. Please, please give me a call. just pm.

Tell Brad the walleye fishing in the Columbia is real good. :thumb

Tyewire you saying they killed a 227 off the books? by the way your buck is pretty cool!

I was with friends out there hunting elk and deer! we did see some pretty nice bucks this year! Id say a banner year in the books. Our group ended up taking two bucks and an elk so far. We still have one hunter to fill a tag. he is being picky though and I think he will end up with a nice buck when its all said and done!

again congrats

Thanks!

Yes they did take a 227 Gross non tip out the west side in the roadless on foot. I am hoping I can get a pic so I can post it. It supposedly has two stickers with a drop point.
