Bullet drop at elevation

How much will the ballistics of a 30-06 change when hunting at higher elevations? I am currently about 600 ft. above sea level and when hunting in Utah we will be between 6000 and 8500 ft.? Will there be much of a difference in shooting?

There will be minimal difference in ballistics, though I highly recommend you sight in once you get to Utah.

The air will be thinner which will cause less drag on the bullet. Also, believe it or not, there is slightly less gravity at 8500 feet than at sea level. Both of these will have a very minor effect on ballistics, so minor that you won't see a change at 200 yards or so. If you plan on shooting out past 400 yards, well, I personally don't know how much it will affect ballistics.

Again, just plan on sighting in once you get up to the mountains and you'll be good to go.

I believe that is pretty standard practice for folks going to Alaska and Africa, so probably a good idea. Not to mention, I hate having that doubt of my accuracy, knowing I am dead on gives me confidence to take a shot when I might otherwise be reluctant; I don't ever take questionable shots, but being dead on makes questionable shots for me very doable. Good luck! Be sure and have some time to do the shooting, shooting at the crack of dawn on opening day is generally discouraged.
