CAMO & SCENT CONTROL

HERE'S A LITTLE OFF SEASON DISCUSSION. CAMO AND SCENT CONTROL. WHO'S DOING WHAT? I KNOW WE ALL SEE A LOT OF TV SHOWS OUT THERE THAT ARE BOUGHT AND PAID FOR BY SCENT-LOK, WHITE LIGHTNING, DEAD DOWNWIND, AND NUMEROUS OTHER COMPANIES PIMPING THEIR SCENT CONTROL PRODUCTS. IS EVERY ONE BUYING INTO THESE PRODUCTS? PERSONALLY, I WOULD LOVE TO HAVE THE ADVANTAGE OF WALKING THROUGH THE WOODS, AND NOT HAVE A CHANCE OF SPOOKING ANIMALS DOWN WIND. BUT IS IT REALLY POSSIBLE? I ACTUALLY OWN A SET OF SCENT-LOK THAT WAS BOUGHT FOR ME AS A B-DAY PRESENT. I REALLY LIKE THE MATERIAL OF THE PRODUCT. NOT REALLY EXCITED ABOUT THE CAMO PATTERN. I AM REALLY HAPPY WITH THE CAMO PATTERNS THAT PREDATOR PUTS OUT. BUT THE ONLY MATERIAL I CAN FIND IT IN IS COTTON. WOULD LOVE A LITE WEIGHT SYNTHETIC MATERIAL IN PREDATOR. WHAT ABOUT THE OLD SCHOOL WAY OF BAKING SODA WASH, AND PINE BOWS IN A BAG FOR SCENT COVER? I STILL LOOK AT A FRESH PILE OR PUDDLE OF DEER OR ELK SCENT LEFT IN THE WOODS AS A GREAT OPPURTUNITY TO DO A LITTLE IN FEILD COVER SCENT. NOTHING LIKE GETTING IT STRAIGHT FROM THE SOURCE! LOOKING AT A LOT OF THE PICS POSTED, I DON'T SEE A LOT OF SCENT CONTROL CLOTHING. SO, WHAT ARE YOU DOING? :-k PERSONALLY, I CAN'T IMAGINE HUNTING WITHOUT THE WIND IN MY FACE, AND THE SUN AT MY BACK.

great topic, i personaly do not do anything extra besides trying to keep the wind in the face and being very quite.

the idea of a sent free aproach are nice but i don't think are completly possible. the parts of yout that are not covered are still going to sweat and still going to give off scent. however i know of a lot of people that think otherwise.

would be interested in seeing what other people think.

LIVE2HUNT,

I do it although I am not quite as fanatical during my Muley hunts than I am when I'm on my Whitetail hunts.
During Muley season I wash all my gear in scent-free detergent, make sure I'm not standing around the camp fire in my gear (Smellin' like smoke can't be the best when hunting) and I change into my gear AFTER I get to my hunting area (I don't wear my gear while driving out to begin my hike/hunt). I also "cammo out", with the exception of my mandatory blaze orange. However, keeping the wind in your face and the sun at your back is ALWAYS a good idea, regardless.
Since my annual Whitetail hunt is during the rut and we're callin' the bucks in close I do all of the above PLUS bring scent cover sprays to keep my scent to a minimum. As for being COMPLETELY scent free, I don't think it's 100% possible from my experience but I am a firm believer in minimizing it.

I never used to do any of this until I hooked up with a fella while pig hunting in CA. We were able to sneak right up on a number of pigs while doing this so I started doing it during deer season the next year. Works pretty well most of the time but like I said, it's not 100% and nothing replaces good 'ol common sense when it comes to being "stealthy" in the woods and on the hills.

...DeadI, I agree (I didn't see your post until I was done with mine. Must have been typing at the same time).
It's NOT 100% but again, "minimize it when ya can" as far as I am concerned.

LIVE2HUNT, as for the sent-lok clothing and such, most of it is beyond my price range so I just use standard gear and like I stated before, wash it in the scent free detergent (Not sure if deer like the summer fresh smell of Tide or Clorox detergent...LOL).

Of course, none of this has helped to me to bring home anything B&C would be interested in so maybe I'm just being an idiot...LOL

i try to do as much as i can to be sent free but that kinda all goes out the window after hiking out of a deep canyon and sweating like a pig. as far as scent lok goes, i view it as just another tool. its not a cure all as they'd like you to believe but if it helps cut down on your scent then go for it. i plan on trying some this season. Cabelas has some of their silent weave in Max-1 camo with scent lok that im going to give a go. I hate all of the MO and other RT patterns.

LIVE2HUNT, Predator does offer their stuff with Scent-Lok. Not sure what type of material they are using though.

IF ITS FROM SCENT-LOK, IT WILL BE SYNTHETIC.

TO ME, IT SEEMS LIKE A LOT OF MONEY TO PUT OUT FOR HUNTING CLOTHES. I DON'T KNOW ABOUT THE REST OF YOU, BUT MY HUNTING CLOTHES USUALLY ONLY LAST ME A COUPLE OF YEARS. AFTER THAT, THEY SEEM TO BE BLEACHED OUT, AND WORN OUT. I REALLY WANT FRESH CAMO EACH YEAR. I SEE A LOT OF GUYS RUNNING AROUND WITH BLEACHED OUT CAMO AND CAN ONLY THINK, DO THEY KNOW HOW BAD THEY STAND OUT?

IDEALY, I WOULD LIKE TO FIND A SYNTHETIC PREDATOR CAMO SYSTEM THAT IS LITE WEIGHT, MOISTER WICKING, AND CAN RETAIN ITS COLOR THROUGH SEVERAL SEASONS. OH, ALSO, EXTREMELY WELL PRICED FOR THE AVERAGE HUNTER TO AFFORD. SIX POCKET PANT, LONG SLEEVE HENLEY STYLE SHIRT, SIX BUTTON FLANNEL STYLE SHIRT.

NOT ASKING FOR MUCH, AM I?

I highly doubt youll find it from Predator. It too is one of my favorite patterns. Ive worn it for several year but its becoming to hard to find anymore. Ive really come to like the RealTree Max-1 camo. Works great even here on the wetside of the state.

I love Predator patterns and that is all I wear now.

As for real elk crap or pee? yes I will always look 4 fresh stuff and use it.

Scent lok I think is a Gimmick (My Opinion)

Real pine boughs?....oh yea ......always. Nothing better than the real thing.

WIND IS YOUR BEST FRIEND ONE MINUTE, ONE QUICK SWIRL AND YOU HATE IT!

Instead of pine boughs, I use sagebrush. Same concept, different odor.

WHAT ARE YOU GUYS STORING YOUR CAMO IN DURING THE OFF SEASON? DO YOU WASH THEM AFTER THE SEASON, THEN STORE THEM WITH COVER SCENT, i.e. PINE BOWS OR SAGE BRUSH IN A AIR TIGHT CONTAINER FOR THE ENTIRE YEAR? (???)

i do it all depending on how i'm hunting, i have 2 sent- lok suit and they do work great, ive had many times had elk strait down wind [ not by choice] and got away with it. and i also just use cover sent when i'm more on the go hunting and hunt with the wind in my face, and i'm a fan of the cow in heat spray. or the real stuff if i come accross it. it all works sometimes and and it all fails sometimes. the best is obviosly to have the wind in your face but we've all hunted the rocky mtns and the wind swirls! nothing you can do about it and thats when its good to have a back up plan! the new sent-lok suits are lighter and more like wearing regular camo so there pretty convinient to have on. [ after a few days on a bivy hunt you can tell they are getting a little wore out--- scent wize----- and need to be activated again so i bring another pair of close and use the sparringly.

LIVE2HUNT, I don't store mine in any special way during the "off-season". I just wash them and store them in my "hunting closet" until I need to get them out again.

I think my camo wishes it had more of an off season. I use it all winter, in through the spring and few times in the summer chasing coyotes. But I don't store it when I'm not using it. It doesn't take long for sage to break down and lose it's scent. Even during hunting season I have to change out the brush every couple of days.

man i cant even afford to much camo man. i am flat out broke ](*,)

Bigbuck,

You got me thinkin bout them lil trees, have you ever just thrown all your camo in the trunk fer the off-season and just drop a lil tree in every once in a while?.....lol
