camp site -- unit 15 N.M.

Hello All-

Won't be too long now and I will be makin' the long trip from N. Nevada to the Gila in Southern N.M. We drew some ml elk tags in unit 15, but don't know the area too well. I've been tryin' to get some knowledge of the unit thru hunting forums like this, and now I'd just like to find a good place to set up camp. If anyone knows the area, sure could use a few pointers where to start. Thanks.

Here in NM you simply find a spot, any spot as long as its on public grounds and camp. I would suggest hunting around toriett lake. There's always lots of elk in that area. Then if you go to the old 15b side and hunt the borders of the mangus ranch you will find some bulls over there. If you want to hunt the hills north of luna along the arizona nm border you will find elk in there but I just haven't ever seen any monsters in there. If you turn off the quemado/reserve highway like your going to quemado lake there's always elk in those meadows at night. The elk are usually within a mile and a half of where you spot them at night. The best course of action to spot the best and biggest bulls is to drive around at night. If you drive around slowly you will simply be wasting time. They get in the trees until you pass. Kick up the speeds and blow by the elk. Don't stop or you will chase them out of the country. Simply get a quick glance and keep going. Only slow down enough to avoid hitting them. I know this sounds comical but It's helped me to get multiple 340's a 350 and a 370 outa there. Once you find one in your headlights mark it on your gps and show back up in the morning and search the nearest most likely looking spots for where they went. They will be close.

Hope this helps.
