TheGreatwhitehunter. I am planning a second season Elk hunt there. It will be a couple of years before I can draw a mule deer lisence anway. I have one point now,and one elk point. I am just getting started. We are going to try to hunt every other year. But I hope to go back to Co in 2010. Probaly have to go by my self in 2010. Can you tell me any thing on the elk hunting there. In GMU54. Whats this I here about them making 54 and maybe 55 draw units for elk? I was talking to a guy from the US Forest Sevice. And thats what he told me.

Yes Colorado is adding several Limited entry elk hunting units to its list to take effect in the next year or two. 54 and 55 will probably end up limited for elk as they are in trophy deer areas. But as far I know DOW has not released there final draft for the New addition of the Limited elk units for Colorado.

Unit 54 is roughly 8o% public land and elk are found through out the unit. Your best bet for detailed info is to talk to the Bioligist for the unit or the local warden. Not really a hot spot for elk as it is a trophy deer unit but quite a few elk do live in the unit.

Take 135 north out of Gunnison, go a few miles, turn left up a long valley, hunt elk.

I'll be next door in 55 if you get stuck as the road is a bit iffy near the top some times.

Best hotel in world is the Comfort Inn on rt 50 in downtown Gunnison. Rooms about $59 in hunt season.

Good luck.

We hunt east side of 135 which is unit 55. But I am putting in for leftover rifle tags for 3rd rifle for 54 as there are 209 either sex ones left. My info on the elk huntign there comes from informed sources who have hunted the area I mentioned above. We'll be up near Gunnison 2nd rifle for mule deer so maybwe we could meet up for supper or something. Also we are gonna go scout that 54 area in mid July for a few days.

Yes just stay in touch and we can meet up in Gunnison for supper. The place across from the Gunnison Comfort Inn has good bbq but the waitresses aintthe best, and theres a big green restaurant on east side of 135 near ChinaMart that has GREAT food( I forget the name of it). Also some of the hotels on 135 will let ya comeinto town and take a shwer for a coupla bucks if y'all need one.

Also if any forum members here get thrid rifle tags for unit 54 let me know maybe we can camp and hunt together if we draw the third rifle tags we put in for last eve. We plan to go scout the place in Late July and then figger out where to set up our camper.

Good luck to all.

Hi everyone. My friends and I just got drawn for archery season in unit 54. I was wondering if anyone had any info on where to go, trail heads, etc. We are planning a DIY hunt and live over 1000 miles away. Any info, advice, or tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks and happy hunting.
