CO Unit 44 4th Season Scouting Trip

My cousin and I have been applying for NR Colorado deer points for quite a few years and really we got caught in the point creep game which has become increasingly frustrating. (That's a different thread for a differnt time) He finally decided this year it was time to try to get a tag and use his points and was lucky enough to draw a 4th season unit 44 deer tag. We are by no means trophy only hunters but obviuosly would like to give ourselves the best opportunity we can at a quality deer. We talked a lot about when was the right time to get a tag and really we decided to do as much research as possible, pick a unit to give him an opportunity at a quality deer and then make the best of it and not put a bunch of pressure on ourselves based on the number of points it took to draw. To be honest, to us the quality of the hunt isn't dependent on tagging a "trophy" rather it's what you make of it and the experience and memories of the hunt. We've been on many hunting trips and ate tag soup afterwards but damn they where fun hunts!

With all that being said we've decided to come out from MN next week on a scouting trip to try to get a feel for the unit and the area. He has talked with the DOW and they've been helpful but I thought I'd throw it out here to see if anyone that's hunted unit 44 or happens to live in the area would be willing to share any information. Obviously not looking for anyones honey holes or secret spots just more general information to get us going in the right direction. Thanks in advance for any help.
