I had a doe and buck tag for 2nd season in colorado for unit 25 and 26.
Woke up ay 4am. Got ready and ate some breakfast. Started waking at trailhead at 5am. Waked 2 miles in and had to wait till got legal light. We wanted to walk through these fields in the light. At 7:15am it was legal light, so we started walking slowly. The all of a sudden a little buck with a lot of does. I shoot the buck and it dropped. We watched it for about 5 minutes. The does wouldn't leave. I got a good angle and shoot a doe about 90 yards from were the buck was laying. So I had a buck and doe down by 7:50am on opener morning.

Thanks for the pics too!
Great shooting!
My dad almost shot another one the same size just cause it was close. But couldn't get a shot. So we are heading back down there this weekend in search for his buck.
We seen about 12 does and 1 buck...
1 elk track.
yea opening day there was a lot of shots. sunday with all that snow, not so much.
other hunters told us they seen a 5x5 and a 3x3 bucks in the same general area. so we are going there this weekend.
last year i seen a 6x6 and 8 cows about 300 yards away from where i shot my buck this year.
week days, school for me.
weekends=hunting :)
so you live in gypsum? we pass through there for gas.
went back for a 2nd weekend trying to fill dad's buck tag. only seen 12 does. but found some nice area maybe for archery hunting next year.
You must have been part of the shooting party across the river from me! I was in unit 35 and I have never heard so many shots on opening morning. At daylight I had 13 hunting in the same draw as me, I went the other way and left them behind. We didn't get into any good deer until we started hunting down near the river. Everything seemed to be pushed very low. Talked to someone who packed into the radio towers on Horse Mountain and he saw 100 head of elk in 6 days, but no mulies up high. We were all looking across the river and wanting tags for over there, we saw some nice bucks over that way and not near so many stinking people!

I did see one gut pile just past the aircraft coming out of Gypsum!
You got me wondering, 100 elk in 6 days,
Where is Horse Mountain?
