colorado 3rd season deer hunt

The deer hunt so far this week had not been going to plan . Passed up on some small fork horns and missed the big 24" buck Saturday evening . I shot high and a little behind him while he was running down the draw . So now it is Thursday evening and still no deer , so we decide to hunt the draws on the south side of Buffalo Peaks . As I am working in the second draw all I am seeing so far is does and fawns . As I come to the end of the second draw , where another small draw works in to it , I work into the bottom slowly . Just before I reach the bottom I notice a deer up on the other side up and to my left . The deer has noticed me also and is watching me . The first thought that comes to my mind is that is just another doe , so I decide to scope the deer out . Just as I do that , the deet turns 180 degrees showing his rack . I notice that one side of the rack is just outside of his ear and did not pay to much attetion to the other side . So by now the buck has started to take off and I am faced with another running shot . I try to figure the lead on him and shoot when he is about 200 yards off . I pull the trigger and the shot rings out . A cloud of dust comes from the ground just above his back and he goes over the ridge . By now it is time to head back to truck and head to camp . When we get back to camp , we decided on making a a deer hunt Friday morning before we break camp and head home . My brother , Andy and I are the only ones going on this hunt . We go back to the same draw area that we hunted Thursday evening figuring that this was our best chance for a deer . The was for mr to go where I had shot at the buck the evening before and Andy would work another draw that works into it . As I get to where I shot at the buck some does and fowns kick out of some cover , so I decide to work to a little rock cover thinking that I might see some deer if Andy kicks some out . But jusy before I get to the rock cover I see some deer feeding the the bottomm of the draw . I scope out the first deer that i see and it is a buck , not a big one but it wil put meat in the freezer . So i steady myself and shoot , the buck is hit and starts to go down . I look at him more closely with my scope and come to find out that it was the same buck that I shot at Thursday evening , but noticing his other antler was strange . I radio Andy and let him know that I shot a buck and that it was the same buck I shot at Thursday evening and that it was a freak deer . Well Andy made it to the bottom of the draw and commented that it was a strange looking set of antlers . The plan had worked out good and produced a good buck . Here are some pictures of the deer and the countryside of where we were .

No kiddin! :thumb

Very cool and unique. I'd be really happy with him, but I'm kinda a fan of weird bucks like that. He is a little (@@) looking.

Thanks for sharing the story and pictures. Enjoyed all of them.

One other odd thing I noticed about this buck after walking up and seeing the antlers was that he still had his summer colors. All of the other deer we had seen throughout the week had all turned grey. Can't figure out if this was genetics or maybe from some kind of trama that caused that left antler. He was healthy in all respects and had packed on a bit of fat for the winter. Can't wait to see the mount when my brother gets it done. We will be talking to our grandchildren about this buck. We figured his age around 5 1/2 to 6 1/2 years of age. As my brother put it, I've shot my once in a lifetime buck a couple of years ago but he got a buck you may only see once in a lifetime. What made this hunt even sweeter is we went out for the last hunt of the week by ourselves. The others in camp figured there was no sense in going out as we would be leaving that morning and what were the odds we'd find a shooter?
