colorado 3rd season elk hunt ... doing the right thing

there are no pictures for this story , just hunters doing the right thing at the time . after our evening hunt ,my brother had to go into town while mel and myself went back to camp . we he returned , he had said that some motorist had hit an elk on the highway . after super mel and i went into town . on the way down trout creek pass we spotted an injured elk on the side of the highway . we had passed a state trooper before we had gotten to the elk . so we turned the truck around to tell the state trooper about the elk . we passed the elk again on the way to tell the state trooper about it . about this time the state trooper had turned around and was heading down the pass . we turned around and caught up to him where he had pulled over , passing up the elk . mel got out of the truck and talked to him explaining to him about the elk . then everyone turned around going back up the pass to where the elk was . the trooper had said that the department of transportation and himself and the motorist that hit the elk could not find it . he then made some phone calls to the dow . he then told us that we could have the elk but he would have to shoot it . we decided that the elk meat should be donated after he shoot it since we had already gotten four elk so far on the hunt . so the trooper shoot the elk and we field dressed it for him and helped loaded it up for the trooper to drop it off for donation . like i said no pictures , just hunters doing the right thing .

IMHO, this not only saved the taxpayers of CO the cost of removing the animal but will also provide some excellent meat to those in need. I never saw the elk on the side of the road driving up the pass but I will say my brother has the best set of game eyes, day or night, than anyone I've ever seen. I've been catching up in the past few years but have a long way to go.
