Colorado Elk

I was looking at the DOW website in Colorado and they report what looks like a 16% drop in the elk kill last year. Couple this this to a bad winter that's happening now and what do you think the chances for a successful are this upcomimg year?

P.S. It looks like the DOW officers are going to enforce federal law as it applies to ATV use this year too.

Hopefully we will have a early spring. As they close more and more roads, it's going to make it harder and harder to get to the elk. Horseback hunting might be the future for wapiti hunting. It was really warm for a lot of the seasons last year and the elk weren't moving much and many of the elk that did move, found their way to private land. We have more and more land every year that is leased up or purchased by anti-hunters and not hunted hard and it doesn't take to long before the lead cows find these safe havens for the herds. JMO.

m gardner,
If the ATV laws are enforced, that alone will make any hunt more sucessful... =D>

Hiker hit the nail on the head, Conditions of warm dry weather made it difficult to hunt, Guys that have killed elk for years in areas they know how to hunt down low in later seasons didnt have the luck just because it was still so nice up high and the elk had not migrated down yet.
The elk heard in CO didnt get hurt like the deer did. And look at it this way there are 16% more elk this year to hunt because last years hunters didn't kill them.

one thing to remember in the sucess rate being lower , is that there were less elk tags given out also . a wildlife offical told me that when they purged the preference points this year , hunters with as much as 12 to 15 points lost them because they did not follow what the dow was putting out in the big game regulations from year to year .

I really hate to say this but you are all wrong as to less elk being harvested last year. Many theories but only one truth. That truth is that I was not able to hunt being as I was in Iraq last season. Plain and simple.
