We put in for 3forks Ranch RFW bull elk tags with no hope of draw. We didnt draw but got the points accumulated. We like the OTC bull tags anyway, but in a few yrs we'll draw 3forks once the points accumulate and I can take the wife on a first class hunt I coulndt afford otherwise.

Good lunk in 49 Zatarain. I hunted there last fall 1st rifle season with
a buddy and he killed a nice 6x6 while I ate tag soup. It's a good
unit but very rough. If you can use mules or horses then your odds
of success go way up. Good Luck and be careful !! Later Baker

Baker,
Zatarain and myself, along with my dad, cousins and friends, have been hunting that unit for more than a few years now. It is the unit of choice for us but horses would be ideal. We have always had succes there while others eat tag soup for one simple reason:

We get away from the roads and put a lot of wear and tear on the old boots. Others tend to stay as close to the road and just don't have the success.

Short funny story: My brother, his friend and cousin went out on an evening hunt. They came back to camp with a 6X6 bull in the bed of the truck. My cousin had shot it and went on for a half an hour about the hunt, where he headed off to, the terrain, the path he followed, etc.

Bottom line, he got back to the truck and was waiting for the other two to get back when he heard something busting through the brush. He turned, he looked, he grabbed his rifle and shot the bull 50 yards off the road lol

After he finished his long, drawn out story, I asked him why he didn't just say he went out, saw nothing, came back to the truck and shot the bull next to the truck? I guess we all need to embellish our stories now and then.

Great story Bert. Timing is everything. I agree 100% about the leg work.
This was our third hunt in 49. Going once every 4or 5 years is getting old
I had a chance at several smaller bulls last fall but the really nice 6x6 that I
was on just beat me ](*,) . I got to within about 80 yards of him 2 times but I didn't
have a clear shot. It was a great hunt and I can't wait to get back. I've taken 2 bulls
from 49 but no real monsters yet. Later Baker

Hiker,
I had two points and still put in for a cow tag. Probably would have gotten a bull tag but the wife was more than upset that I didn't put some meat in the freezer last year.

Good luck to you and the girls and maybe one of the days we'll finally be able to meet!

ABert,
Did you burn your points for the cow tag or did you draw it 2nd choice? Are you coming up this summer to see your brother?

no go here....

Hiker,
I used my points to make sure I drew a cow tag in our unit of choice. My freezer is empty and buying meat at the grocery store doesn't sit too well with the wife lol

Still a bit up in the air if I'll be up this summer. Hopefully will be starting my new job soon and that may interfere with getting up there.
