Colorado Elk/Mule hunting?

New member and this is my first post. I am planning on a 2005 hunt in zones 42 and 421 Near Grand Mesa, Collbran, CO. Looking for lots of general advice. Being not from the area, are we better off using a guide service? Are we better of with going Elk only and in the rut? Or are our chances still good if we wait for the Elk/ Muley season and try draw for Mules as well? If anyone has any comments, suggestions, or needs further info, please let me know. Thanks for your insights!!mike_rodman@hotmail.com
