Colorado High Country Bound

Well, I'll be pulling out early on Monday morning for my above timberline archery mule deer hunt. I've been waiting a year to return to the high country of CO and glass up those tremendous muleys that call those mountains home. My backpack is loaded (down to about 47 pounds this year) and my bow is tacking...........now if my body can withstand the grueling 10 mile hike again I'll be good. :)

Chat with you boys and girls in a few weeks. No matter the success, this hunt is quite the adventure for me. Good luck to you Utah boys this weekend.......stay calm and pick a spot!

I'd say "Good luck!" but I've seen your past successes. I know you'll get a biggun' and have a great time while you're at!

How do you get meat out before spoiling when you hunt this early and have to hike out?Dry ice?

NONYA:

I have to bone out the meat and place it in game bags when I'm in the back country.......I generally hang it in camp overnight (gets into the 30's at 12,000') before I pack it all on my back to trail head.

Then I generally take somewhere for cold storage until I'm ready to leave (taxidermist or meat locker). Sometimes, I have a butcher cut & wrap for me and then deep freeze for a few days. I pick it up and place it a insulated cooler for the drive home. Usually still solid by the time I get home.

God's speed BOHNTR!

47lbs is really good. I have cut my pack weight in half with basicly the same type stuff just by being weight conscious.

Anyway, be safe, keep the wind in your face. May your arrows fly true, and find their mark.

Roy, I hope you have a great hunt. 12K Whew....that lightning does a good job of keeping me away at that elevation. Do you camp down a little and hike up each morning and night to avoid those afternoon storms? Be Safe.

Yeah, I camp at about 11,400' in some scrub spruce to TRY and offer some protection.......it can definitely get "western" up there this time of year.
