Colorado Mule Deer

Have 6pts and am looking for suggestions on where to put in for draw? I have heard 61 and 55 are good, any others? Primarily an archer but will consider muzz or rifle. NF or BLM, backpacker that is not afraid of a hike. Thanks

61 and 55 are both great areas...also around Meeker can hold alot of nice bucks...especially if you are willing to hike.

With those points, I'd look at unit 61 archery.....quite a few 160-180" bucks on that plateau.....

cobo, Welcome to Muleymadness. I agree with 61, should be a good unit.

Thanks BOHNTR and HIKER. If you can offer up some access points, landmarks, campgrounds, that would be greatly appreciated. My email is jec110@aol.com. Thanks again. :thumb

If you are looking at 61, Divide Road runs north/south and gives you access to the unit. There are several forest service campgrounds along this road and you can start out high using a spotting scope to locate and then plan things from there. Easy access out of Grand Junction(hwy 141) or Montrose(hwy 90) to get up or over to Divide Road. You can see for miles from up there. There are plenty of nice bucks in that area and tags are limited for both elk and deer, so you won't deal with a lot of hunters. Good luck.

ad3hunter, Thanks for sharing your information with Cobo. I haven't hunted 61 before but hear good things about it. I heard the other day that CDOW is thinking of limiting unit 62 too and making it a trophy unit in the future.

Unit 62 deer is limited already, if they would limit the elk hunters that would be great. I hunted the first 10 days of archery for elk last year and ran into people everyday but 2. Way too many elk hunters in 62. On deer, a NR has to have 1 PP to draw already and I hope it doesn't get worse, I am taking that point this year to draw it next year. Hopefully my second choice will come through.

a3dhunter, if I remember right it was elk they were talking about limiting.

Sure would be nice if they limited those elk tags, we can only hope. As it is, there are some that say there are bigger bulls coming out of 62 than 61. There are just more "bigger" bulls in 61 so you have a better chance at tagging one.

it always has puzzled me why they didn't make both 61 & 62 limited entry elk areas from the get go.

Thanks a3dhunter for the info. I applied for another pp for this year for deer. Will be heading out to redstone area to hunt elk and do some deer scouting.

Hello

I am a new member. I hunt almost exclusively on Fort Carson. It takes quite a few points to draw for deer. Last year I had 5 points and still did not draw. There are not a lot of realy big bucks, but there are quite a few 5x5s. CDOW opened a doe season on base. There are way to many does.
Anyway I should draw a tag this year. It is a good thing to, I need to taste some venison.
