colorado success unit 62

Well, I hunted for eight days and saw a lot of smaller bucks. Heard some rumors of some nice bucks but never got into them. Finaly took this buck on Saturday and he was the biggest buck I saw on the whole trip. Passed on over thirty bucks on public land. I just wasn't seeing the caliber of deer I expected. I am more than happy with this buck since he is the biggest I have ever taken. My Dad and Uncle took some three pointers. A great trip for all of us.

Although I am usually not that good at this sort of stuff, I'll take a stab at it....

How about 140 or so?

Congratulations on a fine buck! As a measurer, I'd have to "photo guess" that buck about 132" net. He'll gross around 140"??

Ah Roy, you're just sayin that to make feel better about my scoring abilities....LOL (My guess WAS gross, darnit).

well guys, this is the first buck I have tried to score so I am sure I messed up somewhere. I tried to follow scoring instructions as well as I could and came up with 149 and change gross with 145 and change net. Can you tell me the most common mistakes made on scoring?

Did you add the tip to tip or outside spread to your score? Remember, those are only for statistical data. The only spread measurement you get is the distance inside the main beams. Give us some of your measurements and we'll see how you did.

(did not count: tip to tip=12", greatest spread=22")

inside spread 17 1/4
main beam 18 7/8 19 1/4
first point 1 3/4 1 1/2
2nd 14 1/2 13 7/8
3rd 10 3/4 9 3/4
4th 3 5
h1 4 5/8 4 5/8
h2 4 4
h3 4 3/8 4 1/4
h4 3 3/8 3 1/4
total 66 5/8 65 1/2 diff-4 1/2
subtotal 148 3/8
total 144 7/8

????????
Well, at least now I can be told if/where I screwed up!!!!!!!
Have a good one guys!
Thanks
Jason

With those numbers, your score seems about right. Without knowing where you drew your baseline measurements, it's difficult to know if you're correct on their location (common mistake). However, it looks to me like you did pretty good.....know matter the score, he's a true trophy for you. Congrats again. :thumb

BOHNTR,
thank you.
He really impressed me with his body size compared to all the other deer I had been seeing, he just looked huge, and to me that made his antlers look bigger too. All I can say is that I would have shot him opening morning, so to get him on day 8 of 9 when I had passed up so many bucks I felt real lucky!
By the way: I have hunted California, and I never saw any monsters like you have taken. Congrats on a great year.
