colorado unit 65 archery elk

Looking for info on where to start looking, access points and such, for unit 65. Looking at the opening week of archery season spending 12 days up there, any advice on this unit. I have heard of elk herds being up to 200 at this time in this unit, I find that hard to believe though.

Believe it about the elk herds. If you know the Cimmaron drainage area, go to the end of the middle fork road. On the way up you might see some elk in the clearings higher up. It's a short hike to the basin and there are usually elk in it. Be prepared for some rough country and have a plan on getting an elk out. Lot of elk taken for those that leave the roads during archery and muzzleloader seasons. Most folks tend to stay very close to the roads because of the terrain. Can't say much for the wilderness area as I haven't been in there. My brother could probably fill you in on that. As long as you get away from the roads you have a pretty good chance. I've never seen so many road hunters as I have in unit 65, and that includes archery season. Never really figured out how you could road hunt with a bow but they try nonetheless.

zatarian6-pm'd you back
Well, my problem last year was hiking away from the roads and still seeing guys in the woods, way too much hunting pressure. I would wak for an hour and then meet someone who came on from another road. Looking for a place to be able to get back in there and not run into someone coming from the other way. I do have a travel trailer to serve as camp, so wilderness area is pretty much out for me. Unless I was hiking in for the day. Thanks again guys. I will be out there scouting for a week in July.
