Colorado Unit 74 - Early Rifle Draw - HELP!

My dad finally got drawn for the unit 74 above timberline rifle hunt -which opens in early september. We have been putting in for years - and he got it with 10 points. We scouted a little last year when we were in a unit close by elk hunting.

Can anyone recommend someone with horses/mules to pack us in the high country. We have always backpacked or used llamas to get into the backcountry - but a packer seems easier for this hunt. My dad is not young anymore - but still can cover some miles on the mountain tops - just would like to have a packer to conserve his energy for the hunt.

Also - any info on which trailheads/areas would give him a chance at a big buck in a high mountain bowl would be great.

I would also be willing to go with a guide - if there is someone who really knows the area and can put him on a big buck. Might be his last chance at a real monster.

Thanks in advance -

I don't know any outfitters, because we always took our own horses. We've muzzleloader hunted unit 75 and 751 for around ten years. Oh if I was only carrying a rifle several of those years. We found some bruiser mulies, just couldn't quite put a ball into them though. You probably already know that you are going in absolutely the best time to be in the high mountains. Good luck, hope to hear how your hunt was.

Call the DOW office for that area (Durango?), tell them what tag you have, and ask to talk with anyone who has knowledge of that area. The DOW guys who cruise the unit will be your best source of info. Next you can try calling the USFS office that administers the area you're planning to hunt; ask if there's a biologist or anyone else in the office with knowledge of the area. I've found that the DOW folks are generally more helpful then the USFS people, but you can get good info from either source. This is a "special" tag that not lots of people draw (akin to sheep/goat tags) and if you can show these guys you're willing to hunt hard I think they enjoy offering helpful advice. The DOW people would probably be the best source of guides/outfiters for the area as well.
