Columbian WhiteTail

Little known about them, but a great deer to hunt if given the chance...I got that in 2006 and took this buck...With only two (2) open units in Oregon, build a few points and go for it.... :thumb

very cool! was it a "100"r a"600" series tag? did you hunt public land or private [ not that it matters] what else are you in for in oregon?

That was 123r1 the Umpqua tag....I hunted private land near the river. In for that again and the Powers Tag for Elk....

AWESOME! I've had the opportunity to see them a time or two but of course, just like 99.9% of everyone else, I have never had the opportunity to hunt them.

The story of these deer is a testimate to proper conservation efforts by the Oregon DFG.

Lot of fun and a privlage to be one of the first to get to chase 'em with a bow....Thanks guys! Hopefully get to do it again...Here's a few more shots from the Trail-Cam I had out. Once I found I drew the tag, I started scouting early on, that and gaining access to where I thought I'd do well...Paid off....As Hawk mentioned, Oregon DF&G and Fish and Wildlife Service have done a great job in getting the numbers back to where we get a chance to hunt them again...Nicely done! =D>

Per a PM on size....Bigger than a Coues more like the Blacktail in body size....

Ike, Congrats on a great trophy!!! I know very little about the Columbian Blacktail deer but if they are similar to a coues then the one you got must be a monster. What did your buck score? And what does it take for one to make Pope and Young?

6x6 bull, from what I've been reading about the Columbian Whitetail subspecies they are not recognized by B&C, SCI, or P&Y. So unless they make a category for the subspecies then it more than likely will not make the record books. I believe they are working on getting a category for them but not sure.

6X thanks! Sneekee's right, although I think SCI has a catagory for them at this time...He's over 100" and I'm hoping P&Y comes around sometime soon. They have to see the season open for a while and the oppurtunity there for the hunters before they will consider it.

Ike Congrats again! I'm sure when P&Y finally get a category set up for this amazing sub-species yours will be in their books! 10sign:

Ike, that last pic you posted...the one with the front profile, really does that buck a lot of justice. I didn't realize the mass or height of his rack until I saw that last photo. He certainly is a bruiser of a Columbian....and if he measures over 100" then that is just the proof in the pudding!

Killer hit it on the head. Unless you are from the PACNORWEST (WA/OR) or are really up on your North American deer species, most folks really have no idea how rare a feat this is. Heck, those littler bucks in the trailcam pics would be a trophy with a bow IMO.

Once again, CONGRATS!
