We are in the draw for Unit 77 & 78 in Colorado and would like to know if any of you guys ever hunted those units?

Your rifle and bullet is fine, I've used Grand Slams since they became available. I've tried others but keep going back to them. They work well and won't break your wallet. The area you'll hunt has some pretty high rugged country in it. What season you hunt will determine where you'll need to hunt. I've never hunted it but I've traveled around the area enough to know they'll be high in the early season and move quickly to lower ground miles away if it storms. Hope you are drawing a first season tag you'll avoid any bad weather. If not take chains.

Thank You Mark and Killer Bee for the replies, yea Mark we are drawing for the first of the season but I understand the success rate on cows is only 28% in unit 78 and 21% in 77.

Thisa is my first elk hunt.Plan on taking plenty warm gear plus sleeping bags rated 0 so we should stay warm.Got good hunt boots and really looking forward to it.

I do a lot of shooting and guess up & down hill shooting will need some practice, lol

This is a great group, thank you both again,Larry

The sucess rates aren't that bad really. Get in good shape so the altitude won't kill you and arrive a few days early to scout. This time of the year the bulls are still bugling quite a bit and if you scout at night you'll hear them and be able to get on the herd the next day. They don't talk much during the day. Good luck.

Once you get up there, talk to as many locals as you can. Let them know you are hunting the area for the first time and you'd appreciate any tips. Most folks will be happy to give you a little help, even fellow hunters now and then. I haven't hunted the area myself but elk country is elk country. Find where the water is and the elk won't be too far away.
