coyote sneak

While hunting mule deer in SD this year I was slowly sneaking along a winding creek bottom, into the wind. I've learned from experience that this method works better for getting close to game than my old method of staying up high hoping for a better view. You get a better view up high alright, but it's usually of game running out way ahead of you. Anyway as I came around a bend in the creek channel I spied this coyote sunning himself on top of a cutbank. He had no clue I was there. This is the first coyote I have ever snuck up on like this. I was able to crawl up the bank, put a laser rangefinder on him and make the shot from 180 yards in the prone position with my .300 Win Mag made by Hill Country Rifles. I use a "Model of 1906" leather sling made by Turner slings, these slings are awesome and you can get super stable from either prone or sitting positions with the proper use of this sling. I believe these old military style slings are a treasure forgotten by most modern shooters. However these slings are used by all competition shooters in events such as High Power. Had my digi camera and a tiny tripod along and got a pretty good picture.
