Do any of you guys use Salt Licks or a Deer Block to locate big game animals. If so what works and what doesn't?
And why?
I tried this block that I got at IFA for the first time this year.
First few nights it had been licked on, but I forgot the card in my trail cam so no clue what licked it or how much.
Since then, the deer don't really seem to care or like it at all?
As you can tell from the pic.
This one is a mixture of a bunch of stuff, salt, oats, etc...

Here it is about $2.69 for 40 pounds.
The deer and elk really like it and with it being crushed it's hard for the theaves to pick it up and pack it off like they some times do with a block.
The natural rock salt that the cattle men use is good too but it costs more. It does blend in better than the white stuff.
The deer and esp. the elk up in the hills really go for this stuff. But the deer down here in the farms won't even look at it much less use it. I think that there is enough natural salt, (alkli) that the farm deer get all they want. It's a good way to get them to hang around for some good pictures. Treetop

Yep September is a while, next time maybe.
I was over to Redmond minerals a while back and saw them putting their rock salt into the trophy rock boxes.
I bought crushed rock salt from them for about 9 cents a pound, and I see in pro bass that they sell it as trophy rock at 16 pounds for $15.00. Now that's what I call value added marketing.
I ask one of the guys there how well it was selling and he said that they are shipping it all over the nation.
I have used their rock salt for deer and elk for years and the animals really go for it, and it blends in better than a white block too.
So if you like trophy rock just stop at Redmond mineral the next time you are traveling down highway 89 and tell them you want to buy some pit run rock salt for cows. good luck Treetop
Bow nut is right you can just go to the local IFA farm supply store and ask for rock salt for cattle and they will sell you the same stuff. They do seem to mark it up a lot compaired with buying it straight from the mine.
Good luck. Treetop
