Does anyone hunt with a .270 WSM?

I'm looking into getting a new rifle but want something that will knock down most any north american game but won't beat me up at the same time.

The more articles I read about the .270 short mag the more I think I want to go that route instead of getting a .300 mag.

Anyone have experience with this cartridge?

Marc, I used the .270 sm for many years before my wife bought me my 30.06 a few X-mas's ago. I LOVED that gun and never had an issue with it on ANY hunt.

I bought the winchester model 70 classic in the .270wsm last year. First year hunting with it and I really liked it. Knocked down a buck at 390 yards with 1 shot. I have the same gun in the .300 mag. A little heavier but still a great gun. I wouldn't be hesitant about using it (270) for elk hunting. You might look into the .300 ultra mag. Great flat shooting gun, but pretty expensive to shoot. I dont think you will be disappointed in any of these calibers. Good luck with the gun shopping!

I prefer the 270. although I don't have or shoot the short mag. Have heard lots of positive about them though. :thumb

I love mine, I dont use it as much as my 300, but if you want a great all-arounder that doesn't have the recoil of the 300 I would say it is your gun IMO. Shoots faster and a bit flatter than the traditional 270. I have shot everything from little javelina and coyotes to elk with mine depending on the bullet and it has worked great for all.

Good Luck!

When the 270WSM first came out, I was hunting with a 25-06. Took a fall on some ice Elk hunting and broke the stock. I knew I would fix the stock, but needed a rifle to finish the hunt with. So i bought a 270WSM. A little bigger and more powerful than my 25-06, A little smaller than my 30-06.

A friend had just returned from Alaska where they as a group shot 7 moose. 6 of them with the 270WSM. I figured if it would kill an alaska moose. It would work on Mule Deer and Elk. I have shot numerous elk with my 270WSM. It has worked just fine. I load mine with a Barnes 140g TSX. One spike bull elk I shot entered at the base of the neck and exited just above the tail. Pretty much and end to end penetration.

I have also bought a 300 WSM. I shoot a Barnes 165g TSX in that caliber. I don't notice much difference in recoil between the two calibers. They both recoil harder than my old 25-06.

I've heard nothing but good things about the 270 WSM. From the load data I've seen they don't have a whole lot on the good ol 270 Win. But the .270 is a tried and true caliber, the WSM should do good as well.

MOHunter,

I can't speak intelligently about the .270 WSM but against many peoples advice this past season I bought myself a new savage model 114 american classic in the .325 WSM. I was told all sorts of b.s. about this rifle from............. I would be lucky to get a 4" 3 shot group @ 100 yds. It was overkill, it wasn't as good as it's comparable calibers such as .338.

Once I bought the rifle from all the negativity I almost turned right around and sold it before even shooting it. Needless to say that rifle is my number one rifle. It is big for deer and antelope but I really like this caliber. I from this point on will be the first to stand behind the WSM calibers.

P.S. the rifle shoots sub 3/4" groups @ 100

I got one from Winchester's very first shipment of the rifle and it has become my "go to" rifle. It is a joy to shoot, I get under moa accurracy with it, and I have just a ton of confidence in the rig.

Having said that if i were going after anything bigger than elk personally I would go to something that throws bigger lead. Not that a well placed shot from a 270wsm wouldn't do the trick just my personal choice.
