They actually talked about this very think in one of the Board/Rac Meeting this year, I honestly can't remember what the heck they said about it. But I agree with you, sure would be nice to find out sooner and not have to wait so dang long. :)

Our drawings here in Washington used to take MONTHS until the results were posted. Now it's generally about a month. I don't recall what prompted the change but it's certainly much more convenient. With that being said, our results are not released until after most other states have already completed thiers. We haven't even hit the application period yet.

I do know that our drawing process is contracted out. The Game Department does not conduct the drawing. The company under contract is from Oregon if I remember right (I could look it up rather easily I suppose...LOL).

I believe a big part of the delay has to do with gathering spring herd data and setting permit numbers. The draw date is later this year because they will not set permit numbers until the end of April beginning of May. It seems they ought to just move the application period back a month or two so that the waiting period is much shorter and applicants can make better informed decisions once the permit numbers have been set.

This is the email I got

Dear Big Game applicant: As listed in the Utah Big Game Application Guidebook, the 2011 drawing results will be available May 31. We realize this is a later date than in years past, but we needed the additional time to incorporate data from the 2010 hunts (population statistics, tooth ages and harvest reports) into our recommendations for 2011 permit numbers.
We thank you for your patience. We feel the additional time is an important factor in managing Utah's big game.

I got the same thing. :>/ I thought it was going to be good news at first.

I kind of feel cheated in the sense that the post date is later than originally stated. It seems as if when they were accepting everyone's money for tags they had no clue how many they were going to give out. This may be standard, but it is the first time I have dealt with it. It would seem to me that prior to opening the application process they should be able to establish the number of tags to be given out.

If that cannot be done, they should move the application process later into the season so this kind of information is available before starting everything. Just my thoughts.

I just read the article on the DWR website with the number of tags that will be released. The dates have been pushed back for everything. Even the OTC & remaining tags are not going to be available until the end of July. That's terrible, I'll start scouting BEFORE I know where I'm hunting... and that doesn't make much sense. ](*,) :>/
