Eastern Montana Muley hunting

I am looking to do a DIY mule deer hunt this year in eastern Montana. There will be 4 of us total. We have been looking around the Colstrip/Ashland region. Does anyone have any recommendations on where to hunt? BLM land? National forest land? How would it be opening weekend? We are guys that want to get out and walk, glass, and put a good stalk on. Thanks for you help!

I see this is your first post, ::wel to Muley Madness. Take a moment and introduce your self to evey one in the Muley Madness Roll call.

Start by checking maps for public access in the area you want to hunt, The eatsern side is mostly private, contact the warden for the area you are looking into and see if he can point you in the right direction.

Montana has a block managment program not sure the exact details on getting access to the properties enrolled but, I would contact the Game and Fish and see what you need to do.
Good Luck

I have hunted east central Montana for many years. Lots of BLM land. Go on the BLM website and order yourself some maps of the general area you plan to hunt. Maps cost $4 per map and have most roads listed. Also block management areas are plentyfull. PM me if you want more info. I will be out there the week of thanksgiving up around Saco, Malta area. If thats when your going I'd be happy to give you some ideas.

Did you draw tags? :-k If you want to avoid trouble stay out of Ashland,its right on the border of the Res and white/nonlocals arnt exactly welcome with open arms.Keep your valuables close by and stay out of the "indian" bars.The highway that connects ashland and colestrip runs right through the Custer natioal forest,the lower stuff that holds most the deer is private,wouldnt be my first choice if I was traveling here to hunt. =;

Thanks for the replies! Alligator, is there any reason you chose the Malta/Saco region? I will hit you up with a PM.

Hallibut, we drew Deer "A" tags so we are willing to travel to deer + access to the deer. That is interesting to hear about Ashland. Thanks for the heads up! Do you have any recommendations on a region you would focus on?

there are plenty of average bucks in this area but after opening weekend good luck unless you are on or around one of the many ranches in the area
