Eastmans Journal member research area... any good?

For those with a subscription to either of the Eastmans journals, how is the member research area?

Is it any good? How accurate is it? Is it worth the money or just a waste of time?

Any input is appreciated...

I talked to guy eastman for a while about their MRS, they take alot into account and put everything exactly how they find it. I have yet to put in for any tags that arent close to me but when i do i will go right to those pages. Not only do they tell you things like quality and expectaions but they tell you about the drawing processess for each state, deadlines, basically they make going from state to state alot easier. IMO

So is it based on the application process from state to state or how to hunt certain areas?

So if I sign up can I research specific areas or just how to apply and general characteristics of areas

Basically their MRS gives a person a very good place to start from. It gives you a list of all the units and the trophy potential of the unit as well as how hard they are to draw. So in general they give you all the basic information you need to decide what units to apply for. As far as how to hunt the unit and specific info you still need to study maps and Talked to that states DNR. IMHO the MRS can be a great tool that is integrated into a great magazine. It saves quite a bit of time for you if you haven't researched much. In my oppinion it is worth the subsription.

I agree, but will add that even without the MRS, Eastmans is a fun read for the money. Consider the MRS well worth the money as it is in essence a free bonus.

Agreed with the others that it provides a great place to start when scouting new areas. When applying for a new hunt/state, the first thing I do is go read the Eastman's section regarding that hunt. It doesn't always give you a ton of information, and I definitely don't use strictly that information when filling out an application, but it does provide a great place to start. I've been getting the magazine for a few years now and the first thing I read every time is the MRS. They do repeat information from year to year, but there is usually some new info. mixed in that can help out. I think it's a great magazine and will continue to subscribe....just my 2 cents.

i agree with everyone, but will add one more piece. remember that is a huge magazine, and tons of people are reading the same thing as you are. alot of times these types of info magazines hurt your odds of drawing. if a guy can come up with a good hunt that IS NOT listed in the magazine, you will be able to hunt more often. that said- i used there info and drew an awsome tag in wyoming a couple yrs ago and it was great help and just as they said-- very good :thumb

I think it is great information, but they should be specific for bowhunting. If you buy the bowhunting journal, you start reading the mrs and then realize they are talking about rifle hunting, which is nothing i'm interested in. They need to do two different sections for each magazine.

The information is a good jump off point. They show tough and not so tough draws. I hunt at leats three states a year and have found once I choose an area it is a must to contact local wardens and biologists. They are always willing to help you with choosing a specific area to suit your style of hunting. Also topo maps along with google earth are great pre scouting tools. Good luck.
