elk culling process in rocky mountain national park

over the past seven years , park officals have debated on how to thin out the elk population in the park . the elk population in the park is between 1,700 to 2,200 elk and the objective is to get the elk herd down to 600 to 800 elk .
so this year the park officals have decided to take out 100 elk from the herd , this is going to be an on going process for years to come . after debating on different methods in which to do this , they chose to use sharpshooters .
when they cull an elk out of the herd , a dow offical , the sharpshooter and park officals will go on a hunt and take the elk . they have decided to only take cow elk for controlling the population .
after the elk is taken . it is field dressed and tested for cwd so that the person who signed up to win the elk meat on a lottery system knows the meat is good .

since it is a national park and no hunting is allowed in national parks , it would have to have gone to congress to get voted on for hunters to do the culling .
