Elk hunting Utah

I just found out some AWESOME news that I may be moving to Salt lake city for a security job. I really love the area (not the city lol) But the sourounding mountains are beautiful but here is my question! Where could I elk hunt around that area? I have had my resedent switched over because I was planning on going to ST george but that got switched Iam looking for more of a back pack kind of hunt for deer/Elk Iam also bow hunting during the early season. not looking for your honey holes just looking for some over the counter areas with a good number of bulls and bucks and I love hiking so getting off the well beaten path is my joy!

I like the South fork of the Henrys Fork but you can never tell if the Elk have moved in or just through the area because of all the foot traffic in that area. But if i was just getting sarted here that is the first area that i would look into

Congratulations on the move, bummer about the city. :)

Out the highline trail area off the Mirror Lake Highway would be another bet for backpack hunts. Although that area like Henry's Fork has a fair amount of foot traffic you'll not be competing with autos or 4 wheelers. Could be a heck of a time packing out an animal though. But you likely knew that.

I grew up in Salt Lake and moved to southeast Idaho three years ago. If you are looking for a great general area to hunt bulls I would plan a trip back to Idaho every year. The general elk hunt in Idaho is far superior to any public land general elk hunt in Utah. However, mule deer is a different story. I'm convinced that for an archer, there are not many better places than right around Salt Lake City. Most of that area has been bow only for many years now and big bucks can be found almost anywhere if you know how to look.

Salt Lake is not that bad, and there a lot of elk in the Wasatch and Uintas. Since you're willing to hike you'll be able to find them. If you're not a resident in Idaho anymore, a trip to hunt every year can get expensive. We have a cabin SE Idaho and I have yet to hunt up there because of the cost for a non-res license. $275 for deer + the $175 for a hunting license. I think elk is $375 + lic. Too bad because I got a pic of a good bull that was only a few miles behind our place last weekend.
