Elk Shedding

Will the elk have shed by April 8? My grandpa's got a house in Arizona somewhere, he's not a hunter or anything at all but says he sees big elk all over by his house all the time (It's a small town he has a house at down there). He lives in Las Vegas but says whenever he goes down there he usually sees them.

Anyways, I have school off from April 8-16 and was wondering would it be worth the 9-10 hour drive to spend the week at his house there and look for elk sheds? It's worth it to me if they will have all dropped. So what I mean is will they have dropped?

I know a little about elk but not much. Do they have a winter range and a summer range kinda thing at all? Or are they usually always in the same general area? Cause my grandpa isn't going to be able to tell me anything about them except for sometimes I see them on this road and so forth. He has four wheelers and his house is in a small town right by some mountains, do I just cruise up on 4-wheeler roads and look around? Or what can I do to help me get lucky and find some?

Gleave1,

I imagine many of the Elk would have dropped by then. As far as your other questions, that is pretty tough to guess/answer. Shed hunting is difficult these days, and only getting more competitive and challenging.

Good luck if your go, if the Elk are still there and no one else has picked them up; my guess is there will be more on the ground then packin on their heads.

shed hunting is geting tougher every year but i still find a bunch every year. your not going to find alot on a quad though, the best way ive found is to take your binos and do alot of glassing in the canyons in the wintering grounds, plus ALOT OF HIKING

well I guess i'll be hikin a bunch then, thanks for sharin with me. Will the elk still be in there wintering grounds this time of year? or long gone? Cause I've never been there before and my grandpa wont be able to tell me where their wintering grounds are or where they head after winter. So how will I find their wintering grounds after not having been there during winter to watch them?

Just go where your grandpa has seen them? Why can't he tell you, he doens't know or doesn't want to?

No he definately wouldn't mind tellin me if he knew. But he just bought the house there last year and only goes not even once a month, It's a secondary home. Plus he never cared for wildlife much and doesn't really watch 'em at all when he's there, just says he see's 'em all around when drivin around - right around the roads and stuff.
