Hello All, I was wondering who could tell me what it would cost to have a mule deer mounted? I have never mounted any deer so far. I have created my own european or skull mounts. As this is my first hunt and my Dad's, maybe the last also I was thinking of having my dad's buck mounted for him. Also we will be four days from home where we are hunting. How do i keep the cape in good shape?

You get what you pay for.
The going rate from the more affordable end is in the $350-$450 The middle of the road is $450-600 and $600 up for more show quality type or custom work.
I am not saying there is not qaulity taxidermy out there for a good reasonable price but having taken 40 animals to the taxidermist the last 12 years deer, antelope, elk, Caribou, Moose ect ,including fish and birds.
These prices are about what you will encounter, as a taxidermist gains a good rep for quality work, his business and demand for his business grows as does the cost of him doing business to meet the demand for his work. Turn around time also is a consideration I have waited 2 1/2 years for an animal and I have also waited only 6 months.
Inspect a taxdermists work before committing to having him do the work, check his references and make a informed decision dont just base it on price or turn around time. Quality work will last you a lifetime, some taxidermist are great at some things and not so great at others inspect the work of the species you plan on having mounted to inusre you have an idea of what to expect as an end product.
I have used 7 taxidermist over the last 12 years and some have done outstanding work on certain animals and not so great work on others. Taxidermist like artists have their strengths with the species they work with as they recreate them to look life like once again.
I paid $500 for my shoulder mount mule deer last year and it was worth every penny. If you are from Wyoming I would suggest Jake's Midnight taxidermy. They are located in Irwin Idaho and they do an amazing job. I can get you a telephone number if you are interested.... only problem in seeing it (the shoulder mount) every day is that it gets the blood pumping for Hunting season!!!!
