bullet design and placement are the only two factors that come into play.
I have found that my 300WM makes me jumpy, but my 25-06 I can shoot with all the confidence in the world.
What do you think is better: a 200 grain 308 partition in the guts or a 110 grain 257 Accubond in the boiler??????
shoot a caliber that you have confidence in, use a well constructed bullet, and know your limitations.....
If its less than 200 yards, I think I'd rather have my muzzleloader in my hands than any other weapon, strikly due to my confidence with the gun

I use a Winchester .270 but would love to have a Savage or Ruger 25-06.

I like my Remmy 760 in the '06. As a lefty, I prefer the pumps and levers. I have a Browning BLR that I love to shoot, but it is a .223 and does a great job on varmints. Would like to find one (and the $$ to buy it with) in the 7mm-08 for deer and pronghorn.

7mm for me and I love it over my 30-06 but it did cost alot more. You get what you pay for, most of the time.

I have four different brand and caliber deer guns, and have killed deer with all of them. I think the key is what chet said. Pick a gun and bullet combination that you are comfortable with and is suited for the situation.
Practice!!! Practice!!!! Practice!!!!!

I really like the new savage with the accu triggers if im shooting a bigger caliber rifle.Do to the hair trigger on it you cant really pull the trigger or flench. My favorite calibers are the 270 and 7mm mag but it really depends on you.

I own 2 Savages and both shoot excellent out of the box. my 7mm shoots 5/8" @ 100 with 160 grain Barnes' with a factory trigger and action, but it's near to 10 pounds with the after market stock. My savage model 10 .223 is on a factory stock (bedded) with a Timney trigger, picture at the bottom shows the groups it shoots. And yes i would take a deer with it. I also own a Weatherby Fiberguard (Vanguard basically) chambered in .270, it's the gun I took my first deer with and despite being a little less accurate than my 7mm (3/4" @ 100) it is still my go to gun. And last but not least is my wifes Rem 788 in .243 it's going to be my compact deer gun since it only has an 18" semi-heavy barrel. But as of right now it is taken apart being prepped for a bedding job. The 3 or so time's i had it at the range the best i could muster was 1 1/3" @ 100. After the bedding is done I will see how it shoots, them have the trigger taken down to 2 lbs.

.223 groups @ 100 yrds. Left is 3 shot, right is 4 shot.

Rem 700 action, Shilen match barrel in 243 win, Shilen trigger and Mcmillan Stock. Toped with a Leopold 4x12 mark four mil dot. Shoot Nosler 95gr Balistic tips with 1/4" groups all day. That is my Favorite Couers deer rifle. Savage model 12 in 270WSM is my new go to mule deer rifle with Sierra 140gr. Elk and up I use my Winchester Model 70 in 300 Win Mag shooting Sierra or Nosler 200gr SBT. For smaller game like Javelina and varmits I have a ruger #1 in .223 rem but the trigger on it sucks, waiting to have a moyer trigger installed. Just my imput.
