Field Dress Carefully

Well, it seems I read/hear stories like this every year, but I've always shrugged them off or dismissed them without so much as a second thought... but this year I had a childhood neighbor die in an accident while field dressing his deer. I don't know the details but his knife slipped off the carcass (whether he was trying to cut through bone, brisket, etc. I don't know) and he ended up plunging it into his own chest. He died before medical help could be reached. Sometimes we get out there and get excited or have to beat the darkness or weather, but this is something that likely would have been avoided if those simple rules we all learned when we were little were followed.
Make sure your knife is sharp (a sharp knife is safer than a dull one), and never-ever-ever cut towards yourself.
Be safe, be smart, and be successful this weekend Utah rifle guys!

I heard about this too.... very sad deal for sure. A few years back, a hunting buddy was trying to get some ivories out of a cow elk. His knife ended up slipping and it went right into the palm of his hand. He was bleeding pretty bad, so we had to leave the elk that night and get him to a hospital in Afton, Wyoming. He had some nasty stitches in his hand for a while. He broke the above rule: cutting towards himself while trying to beat the darkness.
