Fellas-
The reason I recently joined this forum is to start learning about public land hunts in the western states. I have hunted elk for a couple of years but only in one are where I was working up in Montana with an outfitter... I am looking to start putting in for different areas in Colorado, Utah, New Mexico..etc and wanted some ideas on places to start looking. I just signed up for Huntin' Fool to get some infor so that should help also. Growing up in South Texas and only hunting out west as a job in one wilderness has me pretty green. Starting out I'll be hunting with a rifle but I'm also a recurve hunter. Any recommendations on areas to shoot for or stay away from would be great. Trying to get the ball rolling on hunting out west. Thanks.

The tags for this season are over the counter.
Fortunately, a few years back, I met a rancher that has a cabin tucked away in the mountains for family getaways. We now rent the cabin every year.
We hunt DIY on the White River National Forest. There are plenty of animals to chase. We have had reasonable success.
I'm not sure of what your plans are. We hunt with 7-8 of us every year. We have guys that'll hunt 1 year and not go back. For our Oct 2010 hunt, out of 8, only 4 have ever hunted out west, 2 of the 4 have gone 1 time. 2 of us will have our hands full, but it'll be fun.
The terrain is somewhat challenging. Fact is, elk hunting isn't for everyone.
You can check out my videos on YouTube. Search for BADrury1 and check out some of what it means to be on a DIY hunt.
Good Luck. Hope you have a great hunt.
