From the most educated country in the world..

A while back I was explaining to a friend here in Japan how fun it is to hunt elk. Having never heard of such a creature, I looked it up in a big thick dictionary for her. Not only was the description wrong, but so was the picture. Imagine a Japanese guy looking that up and then heading over to Montana or Washington to hunt "elk". That would be a fun conversation with the game warden. #-o

That's great! I spent three years in Japan and I can tell ya that it's a "whole different world" over there (had a blast though).

Ya mentioned that it would be confusing for someone coming from over there to hunt here but we have home-grown, red-blooded Americans that do that too. When I worked for the Forest Service (before the Navy) our ranger came across a fella that had a beautiful 5X5 bull elk on the side of the road. It wasn't elk season yet so he stopped to check out what was goin' on and they guy proceeded to babble on about how he had just shot the BIGGEST MULE DEER he had ever seen!!!! Might have a bit of sympathy if he got confused readin' that Japanese dictionary but can't find any sympathy for pure ignorance!

Yeah some guys will just screw up even the simplest of things. I know a bioligist out of Burns OR who tells every hunter he checks during elk season not to mistake the wild horses in the area for elk. Apparently they find quite a few carcasses when they do counts by helicopter in late winter.

Hey Hawk where were you stationed? I'm not in the military but I've heard that GI have access to some hunting here without having to acquire a Japanese licence. Up here in Hokkaido there are none of those nasty vipers like down south. But it would be nice to have a few of those wild boars around, I heard they are great eating. There are so many deer up here it really is fun. I've got some more pics I'll post soon. The law here is that in order to gain a rifle licence, a person has to own a shotgun for 10 years without incident. So I ended up buying a used Rem 870 express for the bargain price of $1100. Everybody thought I got a good deal :-k Every round has to be accounted for and only 250 shotgun shells are issued each year and I buy them at the police station. Every year I have to take a proficiency test and bring the gun in to the PD just so they can check the serial number. The number of hoops to jump through is just ridiculous! I hope you guys never let stuff like that happen back home.

The word Elk comes from Europe and Asia. Their Moose is called Elk. Their Elk is the same as our Moose. So whoever started calling our
Whapiti, Elk was confused, it was a misstake that has carried on though the years. ???
