Geocaching?

Just wondering if anyone on this site has ever done any geocaching? I am going to give it a try, sounds like a good way to figure out how to use my GPS better.

If you do it, have you ever placed a cach yourself?

I've done it a few times, it's something some friends got the wife and I into. Some of the caches are well camoed. theres one here that is on a walk way that is made out off a nut that looks the same as the other nuts on the brigde.
It will help you learn to use your GPS and it's something the whole family can do.

I haven't done any geo-caching but I found one. Las year I was scouting out an area in the Wasatch and I had followed a bunch of deer tracks up to a ridge. The ridge was a really nice spot, it had a flat top and had heavy timber on both sides with some really good game trails. I found a large pine that would've made a good place to set up to hunt. As I sat down, I put my hand on something just below the dirt. It was a Geo-cache. I looked through the stuff and opened the log book. The last entry in the log was from another bowhunter who was doing exactly what I was doing a few weeks before. I thought it was pretty funny. And here I thougt that I'd found some great ,overlooked secret spot, ha ha.

Yes! I have found 65 of them. I mainly do this in the winter months when the weeds are down and the leaves are off. It gives me something to do and places to go when I'm walking the dog. In the summer (in MN) the mosquitos and stinging weeds are so bad you really don't want to set foot in the woods much. It is a lot of fun, a bit like hunting for a vegetarian. I have taken the family on some geocache treks in places like Arizona, and you definitely go to places you would otherwise never go.

I've been doing it for a couple of years now. Wife got me a Garmin GPS for Hunting, Fishing, Hiking, Camping ect... A friend introduced me to Geocahing so I took the kids out and gave it a whirl. Now it's almost a weekly family activity. We usually pick a spot where we want to hiking then go to http://www.geocaching.com and look up the area that I will hiking in (mapview is the easiest to locate specific caches in the area) pick out 3 or 4 and then we're off. It's a great activing for the family or even by yourself.

it is alot of fun! and you will be surprised of how many there are around your house!!

we haven't placed a cache yet but have some great ideas for some just haven't had time, it has helped us get more familiar with our GPS and has fine tuned our eyes especially for the micro ones!!
if u wanna go sometime we would love to go with you & your family! it is great when my & hubby are looking and looking and looking then ur 7 yr old comes up and within 10 seconds says "I FOUND IT!!"
we just tell our kids.. trade fair, if you take something nice from the cache replace it with something just as nice!
