Get fired up, pics.

Hey guys, the opener for Archery deer in Nevada is August 5th. Just thought I'd share some pictures from last year to get us fired up. Feel free to add your owne "GET FIRED UP" pictures. I'll add more later. fatrooster.
Here is a buck I've been chasing for two years but he keeps giving me the slip!
Some more bucks that gave me the slip.
This is the same buck from the picture up above.
How many bucks do you see in this picture?
A wide 3-point.

This is turning into a fun thread and definitely getting me fired up for the archery hunt. It's only 2 and half weeks away guys!!! I love the pics.....I think I may just add 3 miles to my jogging tonight and the next few weeks so I'm in that much better shape to chase bucks to the end of the earth if I have to!

hound_hunter, I found those bucks in several different spots but it would sure make it easier on me if they were in one spot, lol.
Last year, Hardstalk from this website, drew an archery tag for the same area as I did so we corresponded through PM's about areas to hunt. During the season I hunted with my good friend and hunting partner Steve Stanfill. I was focused on helping Steve get his first deer and so we hunted hard all season but wasn't able to make it happen. On our last weekend we decided to try a different spot and as we hiked in we met Hardstalk on the trail. Hardstalk was hunting alone so we invited him to hook up with us the next day. We set up camp, pumped water and cooked dinner and as we were finishing up Hardstalk came into camp with all of his gear and a little shook up and after he explained the situation I understood why. As he hiked back to his camp he saw where a mountain lion had walked all over mine and Steve's foot prints. But what really shook him up was that the lion had gotten into his tent and chewed up a bag of cookies. You could clearly see dirty paw prints on his sleeping pad. So needless to say, we decided to use the same camp that night. So the hunt was to begin the next morning. We got to our glassing spot before day light and as soon as a hint of light appeared Steve was on the glass excited to be searching for bucks. Well my wife is calling me to dinner so I'll have to finish this story later. fatrooster.

Back to the hunt. At this point I should give you some history about Steve. Steve has never hunted until he started hunting with me two years ago and he still has not put down his first deer. He insist on hunting archery and he insist on hunting high mountain bucks which it great with me because thats what I like too. Last year, 2009, he had multiple stalks on deer but made every mistake that a beginner could make. With all of the chances he had in 2009, we felt that he would get his buck in 2010. So off they go after the bedded buck. At about 120 yards Hardstalk holds back and Steve goes to finish the rest of the stalk alone. He takes off his boots and inches forward ever so slow making each move a tedious task trying not to make any noise. I was happy, he was definitely stalking like a professional. About 30 minutes later he had cut the distance to about 70 yards when the buck jumps up looking at Steve's direction. We don't know how he detected Steve because there was no wind and Steve was so quiet that he couldn't hear himself moving. After a while the buck went to feeding and I motioned to Steve to lean out and look around the rock wall that was shielding his view of the buck. We had practiced shooting out to 80 yards and are good shots but 70 yards is pushing it far for a humane shot so Steve just watched the buck. The buck went back to his bed and stood there for awhile looking and listening and I took a little video of him. Then he got back into his bed. fatrooster.

Sorry about moving the camera around but I had misplaced my camera adapter. So since the buck layed back down the stalk was back on!!!! This is where I have trouble. I'm so worked up and excited that I don't even want to look through the scope to watch the rest but I made myself look. Everything is going great and Steve is closing the distance. He is now about 40 yards from the buck and if he travels another 5 yards he can peek around the rock and see the buck. But suddeenly the buck jumps up and trots out to 60 yards, stops and turns to look at Steve. Steve ranges the buck at about 55 yards and in my point of view it looks like a done deal but to Steve's point of view he could only see the bucks head due to a dead tree the buck had run behind. After a couple of minutes and a stare down the buck calmly turns around and stotts over the little saddle that he first bedded in. This was our last day to hunt and Steve's hunt was over. It would be a whole year before he would get the chance to stalk another high country muley. What a great hunt and a great time. We made a friend in Hardstalk, aka Andrew Miller, learned a few lessons, saw great country, created a lot of blisters, lost some weight and best of all hunted the mighty mule deer in the high country. Blown stalks make better hunters and we are definitely getting better every year. All I can figure is that maybe a thermal current rose up to the buck or a slight breeze that Steve didn't notice in the intensity of the hunt might have given him away. Nevertheless, it was a great hunt. fatrooster.

What a story! Too bad you he couldn't connect but I'd say it's admirable turning down the longer shot even though you'd practiced it.

I didn't mean for this to turn into story telling but rather pictures of bucks. But you guys seemed to enjoy it so I'm glad I shared the story. fatrooster.
