Greetings! Utah Private/Public Land Info

Hi everyone,

Trying to plan for a Utah Mule Deer hunt next season with my brother. Curious if anyone has any quality links to information detailing which land is public and which land is private within each area Zoned for General Season. We will be doing an Archery hunt there next late summer/early fall. Also curious to know where the bucks are at in the cycle of things there during that time of year. Primarily still in bachelor groups I'm presuming with a mix of velvet and hard horned, but wanted to see what those of you that live there have to say. I refuse to go into an out of state hunt blindly so I am doing the best I can, just can't come up with much from the Utah DNR website, I'll have one opportunity to scout the unit that we pick (haven't decided yet but have narrowed it down) but want to make sure I got all my facts straight and know what to expect.

Thank you all in advance and if I can help anyone please ask. I am familiar with Archery Deer and Bear in CA and Archery Elk and Rifle Mule Deer in OR.

I'm not to familiar with Utah, but every other state I've looked at has pretty detailed maps on their state Game and Fish websites. You should also be able to ask them to direct you to a place where you can purchase full sized maps of pubilc/private land (BLM, state, etc...) Good Luck!

Welcome. There should be some good maps on the State's web page, wildlife.utah.gov. If not you should be able to pick up a map that will show you at the local BLM/Forest Service field office, for like $10 bucks I would guess that on the bow hunt you'll probably be on Forest land. Most of the units that aren't in the Northern part of the state are all largely public land with one or two exceptions.

As for the deer they will be up high in bachelor groups as you expected, they'll be in velvet the first 2-3 weeks of the hunt and then begin to strip it off towards the end. It's a lot of fun and probably my favorite hunt. Good luck.

Cant go wrong. Any of the general units offer more than enough public land. Just decide what kind of country you want to hunt and get a tag.------SS
