Grim Reapers

I'm still undecided as to whether I should stick with the 100 grain Montec G5 or transition to a 100 grain Grim Reaper mechanical for my upcoming LE elk tag. Humphries Archery in American Fork swears by the Grim Reaper. The biggest thing that makes me keep coming back to the idea of switching to the Grim Reaper is the field point accuracy you get with a mechanical. Am I just being lazy? I got the G5 tuned in fine last year. Do I have legit concern about the Grim Reaper not doing the job on an elk? What if I hit bone?

If you have any experience with Grim Reapers please let me know what you think of them. All input is greatly appreciated as I am not wanting to screw up any chances I may have on an elk of a lifetime.

Thanks,

Brandon

You're talking to a Huge G5 fan, so I wouldn't be guiding you anywhere else. Why fix something that isn't broke? I did change to the strikers, because I got tired of sharpening the Montec's. On my bow the Montecs flew better than my field points at over 50 yards for some reason.

Another G5 fan, couldn't tell could ya... :)) I shoot the Striker though and used the Grim's this Spring for Turkey...They knocked the heck out of 'em, but I don't think I'd shoot 'em at Elk... :-k

Why would you shoot anything besides an EPEK...They outproform every broadhead out there....

Here is a write up on them and apparently they are made in Utah, which is a plus for me being I'm such a pro Utahn. I'm just happy they make good products like Gold Tip.
Epek Broadheads is a new broadhead company that has a unique broadhead called the X-C3. This mechanical broadhead looks and flies similar to a field tip, due to the fact that each of the three blades is completely concealed in the housing of the broadhead. After the tip is pushed back as it enters an animal, the blades deploy rearward. The offset blade design creates a more accurate flying arrow, thanks to the spiral effect of the arrow as it flies. It also creates a large devastating wound. The X-C3 doubles as a practice head. Turn the setscrew on the ferrule of the broadhead to prevent the blades from deploying. The X-C3 is available in 100- and 125-grain models and has 1.5” cutting diameter.

I might have to try some of these out.

They are kinda similar to the Rage Braodhead in that they are both Slip-cam technology... that's where the similarities end...The EPEK does not fial when shot through blind material...also at the latest SHOT show...there was a contest between Rage and another leading Mechanical, at a 100 yards...the Rage opened up midflight, screwing up the aerodynamics...a similar test was done using that same broadhead (Rage) and The Epek X-C3....after 100 shots the Epek never opened in flight once...the same cannot be said of the other head...Darrin ( the designer of the EPEK) would NOT releasse the product until it was flawless....now I am only using the X-C3

l may have missed it, but when l checked out the website, l couldnt see how the blades are held down. Do they use rubber bands to keep the blades retracted during flight, or is it something else?

I'm not an engineer, but I'm pretty sure that they are held in place by a cam-lock system...they ONLY deploy when they hit...not in flight, and not when you shoot them through the netting on a ground blind. The great thing is by moving a set screw, you can shoot them as practice heads...never do the blades deploy in this configuration

wapiti67- Have you killed anything with the EPEK yet?

nope...just waiting for this season to start...i am so convinced these will work for me, I bought them for my 13 yr old son for his elk hunt....but, I have personally seen them kill a buffalo, and a Russian Boar...neither of which went more then 50 yrds....huge wound channels and no blade failures...I have always been a Muzzy guy, and would NEVER use a mechanical...I'm a huge student of the KISS system...(keep it simple stupid). saying that, I am totally convinced these broadheads are the way to go.

You'll have to give us a report of how they work for you.

I'm curious as to the EPEK heads also, you think it's possible that they'll make a 75 grain broadhead weight? Looks like 100 grain is smallest, not sure a 75 is possible with the design/complications etc. Anyone know?

Proutdoors you know?

Wow, let's get back to the question that was originally asked. Humphries Archery is an awesome shop to take your bow and they know their stuff. You should go to Grim Reapers web site and order the Greatest Hits DVD for $9.99. After you watch the 30 Kills that the Grim Reaper Broadheads do you will be buying them. You can see the blood pouring out of the animals. As for Epic Broadheadsthey are a nice head but I would shoot the G5 Tekan before using the Epic IMO.

I've already bought some 100 grain Grim Reaper's. I'm on board for now, they seem to be a good way to go. We'll see...

Good choice. I hear that the Razorcut Tip doesn't last if it hits bone.

I have used them for the last few years and have been really impressed with them. They fly extremely straight and do a lot of damage.

I'll be using them on my LE Elk hunt this year so I will give my report, hopefully! [-o<

I have three of them and plan on using them this year as well. I hope to also be able to give a report on them and hopefully because something (deer or elk) only goes a few feet.

I shot this buck using the Grim Reaper Razortip 100 grain broadheads. He was at 65 yards but my bushnel arc range finder said to shoot for 60 yards. He was slightly quartered to me. I shot him through the front shoulder and the arrow passed through the buck behind his ribs. He went about a 100 yards and pilled up. Like their moto says shorter blood trails longer stories, or watch em drop.

Good job! Hopefully I'll have an elk to put up here with a similar entrance wound.
