Groundhog Day

So let me get this straight, if the ground hog sees his shadow, then there will be six more weeks of winter. If the groundhog does not see his shadow, then there will be an early spring.

Seems to me that six more weeks of winter would be an early spring. So what do "they" mean by an early spring... five weeks and six days?
