Gun question - Help please!!!

My buddy just inhearited a Winchester model 94 (lever action cowboy rifle) and is is chambered in 38-55. My question comes as I have never heard of this round. I don't believe that it is the same as a .38 pistol shell as the barrel looks to be a lot bigger in diameter. I googled it and it looks like it is more along the lines of the 45-70 round.

Can someone tell me if the 38-55 round is still produced and if so were he might be able to get some. We would love to go shoot this rifle but like I said I have never even heard of the round before.

Thanks.

Take a look at gunbroker.com in the ammo section. They have some. Looks like Winchester still does factory loads, although its not cheap.
Good luck

The 38-55 is currently produced by Winchester; bring the bank book when buying. RCBS makes dies, you can get brass from many places, just remember, the bullets are .3775.
Have fun

If you don't want to buy the reloading equipment I would look at Midwayusa.com. They have just about anything you could want.
