Guns, Guns, Guns

We got back yesterday from an eight day hunting trip and went to Sportsman's Warehouse to replenish our supply of propane for the next hunt in a few weeks. I visited the gun counter as usual and was surprised to see almost no handguns behind the counter. I asked one of the clerks if they were getting out of the handgun business becuase there were so few. He laughed and said that people had been flocking in all week and all tha was left were some single actions and a few 22's and some high dollar pistols. He also said all the .223 and 7.62 ammo was gone. Assault rifles and defensive shotguns were gone too. They were purchased by apparently normal people getting ready for something bad. And that's all I saw there. Some families and guys who had apparently spent most of their lives in a cubicle working. This is worse than the Clinton/Janet Reno years by a long shot. By the looks of who was buying I'm staying away from the public ranges here until these folks are off the learning curve. ](*,) ](*,) ](*,)
I think I'll just go live in my tent for awhile and keep my head down!!

Yeah, here in Utah they had a story on the news saying these gun shops are selling as many guns in one day as they usually sell in one week. Really does make you wonder how many of these new gun owners have ever even held a gun let alone shoot one. I believe everyone should have a self/home defense firearm, but it doesn't do any good if they don't have any experience using one.

Forgive my stupidity on the subject I suppose but what's the big deal? Why is there suddely a huge rush nationwide for everyone wanting to purchase weapons? Why now as opposed to several months ago? The only thing that's changed is the elections and I very easily could be wrong as i've really been cut off from society the past 6 months but does Obama winning really make us any more unsafe (not as a nation but I mean on an individual level in cities where owning a handgun would help).

Again, sorry for being so dumb on the subject. Anyone with any insight to help me understand the situation a little better?

People that trusted the system and the government are now realizing that they have been shafted and are about to get again it worse than ever. Everthing they quietly worked for is disappearing and they can't trust the government to look out for them, protect them and be an ally. I think that there is a real danger because these newly disenfranchised Americans don't know what to do and they are buying lots of guns and ammo. I don't think they plan to shoot themselves and they haven't really focused on an enemy yet, but they are scared and angry.

IMHO, it IS because of our president elect. He helped push the the law forbidding residents of Chicago from owning handguns, IIRC. Now, there is a fear that our 2nd Amendment rights will completely erode away.

I don't buy into this as the Supreme Court has already ruled that private citizens CAN own handguns from the suit filed in Washington, DC. This ruling, in effect, was the first such ruling on the 2nd Amendment...ever. It was a huge blow to the anti's and a huge victory for gun owners. So, I don't see anything changing other than, perhaps, a return to bans on "assualt" type firearms.

Yea, I might be a bit nieve but I agree with ABert on this one. The recent 2nd Amendment ruling was HUGE for us gun-owners/gun enthusiasts.

Am I concerned? SURE AM! Do I think we'll see any wholesale changes to our right to bear arms....not really....at least not at this time. With the economy the way it is, two wars being fought overseas, jobless rates climbing, etc I believe that there will be a LOT of other things that will take center stage when he finally takes office. In other words, I think that this particular issue is pretty far back on the priority list at this time.

With that being said, I must admit that I am one of those folks that went out and purchased another firearm over the last two weeks. It was NOT because of the "changing of the guard" however....I ran into a deal that I could not resist and went ahead with the purchase.

We SHOULD all be a bit concerned based on the track records of the incoming folks regarding firearm ownership. We must also be on top of any new legislation that may come down the pipe in the future. However, the shear "panic" that has occured and the mad rush to the gun shop at this time is a bit of a knee-jerk reaction IMO. (Whether it is or not, I sure wish I owned a gun shop about now!!!!)
