help on my fist Gila hunt

I drew my first NM elk tag this year - Gila 16a. The hunt is at the end of October which I believe is the third season. I have never been to this part of New Mexico and I’m not going to have more then a day or two to scout the area before the season opens. I’m looking for any info I can find that may assist me in my hunt. Where to hunt? How to hunt it? The quantity and quality of bulls I can reasonably expect to see? How good is the road access? Do people have luck hunting near roads or is significant hiking required? Thanks in advance to all those that reply.

I hunted 16D last year and during the third season and all I can say is if it's anything like 16D then you need to hunt low. The elk we hunted were down on the valley floors right at dark and then right at day light they started to file back up into the trees. There was some bugling going on but nothing too major. The bull we got was about a 320 bull and he is the best bull we found. United States Outfitters were after the same bull with a client so after all the problems they caused in NV with tag numbers it was good to take that bull before they could. Good luck on your hunt and hopefully we will get to see some pictures.
