Help with spike elk in Manti???

Well I never really posted it up on here, but I've started school down here at Snow College in Ephraim, UT. Well anyways, one of my football buddies bought a rifle spike elk tag for the area but none of us know anything about the area (or about how to hunt elk for that matter). We've asked around school some but so far haven't found any leads as to where to start looking for some elk.

Has anyone been in the area and know where we can look to find some elk? It's hard to find time to get out but we've driven that skyline drive road a couple times and hiked on a couple small hikes here and there at dark, found plenty of deer but haven't even seen sign of elk yet. I'm already hooked to hunting and have been for way to long, but I think if I could get my buddy an elk he'd have the same itch I do and I could get him into the game long term. Anyone with any advice please let me know. I think the rifle hunt starts in 3 weeks? I'd like for him to at least see some elk if nothing else.

Thanks again! And next week is the end of the archery hunt. I'm missing class on Friday cause that's the tag I have, I haven't had a shot at anything this season yet, but i'll keep you posted 4c

My family has hunted north around Indianola/Spencer Fork for over 70 years and we hunt for spike bulls every year there. There are alot of elk in this area, but you have to get of the road to be successful unless you are lucky to catch them crossing the roads. As afr as that far south I can not give much advice.

I live in manti, and know some places. There are definately better places to hunt elk but I know where a few are. My phone number is 835-6600, name is Hunter. One of my buddies got into the elk last week, so he knows where some are too. My dad's friends hunt around 6-mile canyon (Sterling) and 12-mile canyon (Mayfield) I'll talk to my other friend tomorrow too-his dad just got a spike with his bow. If you were to call after 3:00 I could tell you where they saw them. I will be gone on all the weekends except the 22nd, maybe I could even go show you around. Good Luck!

Hunter, YOU DA MAN!!!

Wildlantlerman; I really do appreciate the info. We're hoping to stay as close to the campus here as we can but if it comes down to it definately don't mind traveling a little ways and trying out where you have suggested, thanks a bunch man!

When exactly is your hunt? My dad has a muzzleloader on Monroe and I need to know exactly when you will need help, and when I will need to bring my wheeler home from the cabin too. I will be gone this weekend, but other than that if I don't have homework or anything I can go anytime. I'm still waiting for that call :thumb

Hunter has given you good advice/tips. I would take he up on his offer. I grew up at the mouth of 12 mile canyon, lots of elk(biggest herd in Utah) on the Manti. Good luck and enjoy.

I see Snow is ranked #1 JC, go Badgers! I was a freshman there in 85 when Snow brought home the National Championship, to bad I was a baseball player.

Never regretted anything so much bein as a lot of my friends are playing and their having the times of their lifes. Next year i'm in for sure (even though I may not play a down since I pussed out this year #-o )

Anyways, I will definately be taking hunter up on his offer.. I always forget to call him until 10 or 11 at night and don't wanna call that late. And right now I have a class in a couple minutes to leave for so..... hopefully after my classes today.

Thanks to everyone for the help though!!

(BTW - we've been scouting every night after my roomates and buddies practice's and last night we finally saw some elk!! called 1 raghorn and 1 decent sized bull into us! My roomate (the one with the tag) was PUMPED!!

Snow College.. It's a small junior college located in a small town (Ephraim) in central Utah. They've earned a reputation for having a pretty good football program throughout the years and are currently ranked #1 in the nation.

Careful, them Badgers can be a little testy. :nono:

I have always referred to Snow College as No Knowledge, course I failed to stay in school there because there were way too many temptations to go hunting. All my sibs are grads of Snow as is my dad.
