Henry Mountain Advice? Will post pics

I will post pics and updates to the forum here as much as possible to give back to the great community here. Of course I won't give away any locations if you would like me to keep it under my hat.

It's time for me to start scouting out the Henrys in the next couple weeks. I really want to make the most out of this lucky hunt (rifle muley). I'm willing to do the scouting and the hiking necessary. If anyone feels like posting or PM'ing me some advice and/or places to get started, I would greatly appreciate it. I have never hunted the area and could sure use a starting point.

Is there any map in particular that you would recommend? Videos?

Thanks!

The wife and I have general turkey tags for that area so we went down over the long weekend to go up on the mountain to hunt them but there was to much water and mud. Going back down this weekend to see if we can seal the deal. Hope that the mud dries up some so that we can get around. Will let you know what we see.

Thanks bow_nut.
I'll try to add to this thread as I get feedback outside the forum.
I talked to a guy that drew out last year for the same hunt and he was shocked to see all the people opening morning. They were sitting on the ridge he had been watching a big buck cross every scouting trip. He said it was as bad as public land because everyone with a tag had 12 guys glassing and radioing (real word?) them. He also said the majority of hunters scouted 2-3 days before the hunt and scared the bucks into hiding before the hunt started.

He didn’t have a lot of good stuff to say about the guides down there either, but I'm not sure who he went with or what problems he had with the other guides down there. I’m going to try to get a bit more info from him next week.

I wouldn't waste the time or the gas money to start scouting until end of July or the beginning of aug. This will give them the time they need to show you whats special. there is nothing special about looking at a buck that has only grown eye guards.

sense you have a rifle tag it might be better to save your scouting time until the week before your hunt starts. The deer will be in the area you are hunting which will give you an advantage come first 1 min of opening morning.

If I had the tag I would take off the whole hunt and the week before. Use my credit card if I had to for gas, food, tires, and food for my help.

I will be taking off the whole hunt and I'm sure I'll be down there a few days before. I just want to get down there and get familiar with the terrain, roads, and travel time. This way I can drool over google earth and daydream. Honestly I'm just so excited I want to go see the place. If this is a once in a lifetime tag, then I want to make a summer out of it. I'll probably go in a couple weeks and then wait till they show their stuff later in July.

Thanks for the advice. I would appreciate anymore, anyone is willing to share.

I am feeling you bro! I'm feeling so geeked about my LE elk tag. Enjoy the feeling. Get down there as much as you can. Doesn't matter if the deer are showing all their potential yet anyway. It's more important for you to feel comfortable with the area, find some saddles, funnels, bedding areas, water, etc. And feel confident about knowing the area, especially if this is the first time you've hunted there. I feel that every minute spent in the woods increases your odds of making it a hunt of a lifetime. Besides, from what I heard you'll see loads of big deer in the famed Henry's.

Good luck!
