Home range

Being originally from Michigan, I know nothing about mule deer behavior. I live in Idaho now and have been hunting here for 6 seasons and still can't figure these things out. Anyway, I saw a decent buck yesterday while I was working my bear bait site. What is the possibility that he will still be around the same area in say, a month? Are mulies habitual? I don't think that they start their migration out of my hunting area until sometime in November. Forgot to mention, I prefer to hunt in the timber.

Very much so, but they will wander and meander around a lot also. If the weather or hunting pressure doesn't push him out, he should be around. They can be a tough animal for sure, best of luck.

ctrout, I agree with Brett. They are habitual and a mature buck will keep to his home range unless driven out by heavy human traffic or pressure, over-predation, etc. However, thier range can be rather wide so please don't get the impression that we are saying he'll right there in that area next month.

The other wildcard is winter/snowfall. You didn't mention how high in elevation you were when you spotted him or what the weather conditions were like. Once/shortly before the heavy snow starts to fall he'll more than likely head to his winter range...if the winters are heavy enough in your area. (I believe you live in the Mountain Home area so we both know that the winters can get rather brutal at times in that area...especially in the higher terrain)

Good luck with him and I hope the season turns out great for ya! Keep us posted.
