honey hole

So i went scouting my honey hole last nite. I tell you something has happened. Last year there where 150 deer in the valley feeding in the fields and then coming back through the property that i have access to on the hillside. and in the middle of the year last year the deer vanished. its like someone just picked up the deer and moved them. I talked to an oldtimer last night (one of the land owners) and he says he cann't explain it either. he said his grand kids aren't even going to hunt on his property this year. first time in 75 years he says that no one will be hunting his family ranch. No deer around. I did manage to find 1 or 2 does around the fields but nothing on the hills and not a deer on the tender greens from where the fire burned half the mountian down last year. all in all i managed to see 2 bucks before dark with a doe and 2 fawns. Both bucks small 2 points. Even on the way to the honey hole there is a place that I call the Zoo that packs the bucks in this time of year and it is a baren waste land. Looks like i will be hunting somewhere else this year..

That really sucks for sure! Had a very similar thing happen in Cali. Blacktails used this area ALL the time. Took nice bucks 4 years in a row, watched the dang deer all year long. It was blm land surrounded by private, basically my back yard. Then the next spring one year, the deer were gone, just like you described. Come to find out a couple months later, a female coug and a her single youngun had taken up residence in the area. With the deer mostly gone, a few pets ended up missing and found some remains of a few wild pigs she took down. The following year, the deer returned just like nothing had happened. Never saw the cat again or any more kills.

Just a thought... :-k Good luck finding a new honey hole.

My thoughts exactly. Sounds like a cougar problem to me. I'd throw out a trail camera and some cougar bait. Buckmaster mentioned that "Buck Jam" brings them in. Sorry though, that sucks!

never thought about a couger. could be. Water no not unless more water means less deer. I would have thought they would have moved up to higher ground but i have been scouting high and low and no sign. I will see about the lion and let you know.
