How do the javelina tags for Arizona work?

Hello all- l contacted the AZ state DOW and tried to find out how the tags for the archery javelina work, the lady l spoke to said this year the archery hunts for javelina are draw only and they are only junior rifle tags.

But when I talk to some buddies, they say the archery tags are still over the counter for the December/ January hunt. l havent hunted pigs for about 9-10 years so l am out of the loop. l know someone here will be able to clear this up. A brief rundown of the late seaon archery hunt would be great. Thanks :thumb

All archery javelina tags are a draw......however, there are several units that go unsubscribed each year. Those particular hunts are generally in January. The proclamations for those hunts usually come out in September.

So if they go unsubscribed, do they become available over the counter? Is September when they become available?

They won't become available until sometime in October/November (generally). They are not OTC per se......unless you buy them at a G&F office. But you can buy them through the mail after wards.

Roy is generally correct, but not completely. Some of the laws have changed in the past year or so. As Roy said, the regulations setting the actual dates etc. will come out in about September.

Currently all Fall Javelina permits are for youth hunts only. That is why the person at the Department told you that. Hunts for adults are all in the Spring, with archery beginning the season on January 1. Most, but not all, Archery permits for adults are offered by drawing with a mid-October deadline for applications (currently by paper only, no online application process in AZ for any species). There are some units, the "urban" units around the major metropolitan areas, which are offered over the counter and are not included in the draw (archery only).

Those permits which are not taken in the drawing will be available first come first served BY MAIL ONLY approximately December 1. I think after a few weeks of mail only, they will eventually sell any remaining leftovers over the counter, but I've never actually seen a law or rule that allowed them to do that.
