That all changes every year. It depends on the winter, the weather the time of the hunt, and the unit. Like on my 2002 muzzle loader hunt it was so hot I saw mabye 6 deer the entire hunt. I ended up shooting a decent 4x4. Now last year I saw quite a few. Most the time you see more does and with them very young bucks unless it is close to the rut. Usually you will see more mature bucks during the early hunts and hunts around the rut. At least that is what I have experienced. Hope this help you out some.

It did man.I really appreciate the response. Now see when I was in SD in mid april they were all over like crazy at lower elevation I'd see wads of mulies about 4-20,and the whitetails were in wads of 5-80(yeah crazy!!),I'm sure it was because they had migrated down there.I would think you wouldn't see as many early in the year when they could be on the mountains too.Over here I am lucky to see a deer all weekend. So seeing that many deer is crazy.Everyone knew I was a tourist I was the only dummy pulled over taking videos and pics..lol

Thanks!

Two years ago I shot a 3 year old, big 3 point mulie on the second morning after passing over 30 smaller bucks on a three day hunt to Utah. Last year I saw some real monsters in Colorado. One group of 9 and two other true monsters that wandered around together. Saw 30 or 40 smaller bucks and got a photo of an old 150 class buck at 27 yards all on a one week hunt. Shot a little 2 point for meat. Utah I took some people who had never hunted before and saw probably 20 small bucks and 2 or 3 big ones but never shot. I could have shot many small bucks. Some at 10 to 15 yards. I had fun watching them hunt.
This year I'm going for 3 to 4 weeks in Utah/Colrado and 2 weeks in Az. And I'll go alone most of the time so I should do fairly well. Most people aren't hard core enough to take and enjoy it.

I know a few places where, during hunting season, you can see over 200 deer in a week. Yes, 200 during hunting season. Bad news is 99% of them are does and fawns.

I know a couple of other places that you will find BIG bucks during hunting season and they are not the least bit scared. One is a farmer's field and the other is within the town limits of a very small town. Yep, they know they are safe.

Early season depending on where I've drawn, I expect to see several bucks in bachelor groups from 3 to 10 at times....That's each time out!

Yep sounds like a few places in Colorado

I know a unit :-$ that you will see 15-25 bucks a day and countless does that is just hunting not even really going hard at it.

it seems when I hunt other states I never see the amount of deer as I do in Colorado

Really depends on where you're hunting. I know three years ago, I was bowhunting mule deer 8 miles in a wilderness in CO. It was a good unit and I was hunting about the 12,000' level. I got lucky and happen to locate a buck pasture high up on their summer range. The day I arrowed my buck, I counted 43 different bucks in that basin alone.....I was in "mule deer heaven".

Of course that is not the norm.......I would say in avergae country, you may see 6-8 bucks a day in the archery season.....I'm talking bucks above the 3 year old mark......I don't count the spikers and forked horns. At least that's been my experience.

Are me talking Archery PLP? Typically I see more bucks during Archery, Muzzle second, and Rifle 3rd. I think the most I've ever seen while hunting was 14 bucks or so during one day (LE unit). Typically I see mostly smaller bucks during the rifle hunt due to hunting pressure etc.

But I've seen lots of deer hunting if you include does, fawns, etc.

I lied, I remember seeing over 40 bucks in ONE group back in 2002 on a LE unit. But this was SCOUTING, hunt hadn't started yet. Not kidding either, the drought forced them together in a meadow for any type of food. I'll see if I can get a picture from video.

Brett 2002 was the year I only saw like 6 deer do to the drought. They were all grouped up on the water like you are talking about but they constanty stayed bedded in the trees and wouldn't move unless you basically stepped on them! That is when I got lucky and jumped a decent 4x4 and dropped him at 70 yards with my muzzy. Of course right after I shot a bigger buck juped out of the same thicket but thats hunting! lol

on a piece of private land that my brother and i lease in northern utah it is common to see 40 -50 bucks a day with all age classes, with 200+ does to sort thru. this is on about 5000 acres that is bordered on 3 sides by other private land including a cwmu. most of the time the sheer numbers of deer make it a pain to get to a big buck.

Last year, we saw 1 nice 3x4 the day before the hunt. The whole time we saw 40 - 50 doe/fauns grazing and 1 other 4x4 which my wife took a shot at but missed. It was too hot last year for any movement, we were having to poke around in the brush to stir up some activity.

The 2007, we saw 10-15 bucks night before and I took a nice 5x6 opening morning at first light and then we saw nothing else the whole time. Ive seen a lot of movement this year, the moon phase should be just right too... Just hoping the weather is a little more chilly then it was last year.

I was just saying in genral MM.Thanks for the replies guys.

I heard from a pretty reliable source that there was a bad winter kill in NW colorado? He said he found 30+ deer in a 20 acre area, not sure if Mt.Lions were part of that or not.He said the elk did pretty good.

I'd say that I average about 30-50 deer per day on a good days hike during a Western hunt. Many are off 5-6 hundred yards. Probably 1/4 are yearling and 2 year old bucks. Usually i will see about one per day around 25 inches, and usually not within my range. I have several times seen groups of mature bucks, sometimes I can work within range sometimes not.

Where I hunt I get discouraged if I don't see a deer per hour in the field. Alot of times they'll be does but it keeps the mind anxious to see if there are any bucks nearby. Like wayne I usually see at least one over the 24" mark. They're often bedded in the pines and nearly impossible to get a shot on before your busted but it's neat to see them anyway. I see more on opening day. Escpecially when other hunters have pushed them out and the deer seem to be frenzied to find a sanctuary. I do see several on the following days but they are alot more cautious. Like I said in another post, I'll often see about 20 passer bucks before one that I'd like to make a stalk on. Good luck to you PLP. It sounds like your very excitied for your hunt and seem to be asking the right questions.

Good question. The answer is "it depends." And it depends upon a lot of variables. I usually hunt archery season, or possibly muzzleloader season. I'll usually be about like what BOHNTR said. But when I "home in" on a buck I'll try to take, I may only see 3-4 bucks in a day. All I would really like to see is one - the one I am trying to kill. The others just get in the way.

I had what was perhaps my worst hunt ever in Colorado last year. I had what was supposed to be a good 3rd season license and never saw a single buck. I gave up hunting after 4 days of hiking and glassing. I was seeing an average of about 4 does and fawns per day.

Here at home on our private ranch hunts, we almost always see at least 15 bucks and 60-70 deer per day. I have been out and seen 50+ bucks in a day with hunters, but usually, it's more like 25. On public ground in Wyoming, it might range from 1-2 bucks per day to over 15. Depends upon the country and weather.
