How many of you have horrible luck at finding sheds?

Ya know Bigbuck, I find more sheds when I am NOT lookin' for em that when I am actually actively hunting them.

With that being said, I am not ahuge shed collector so I don't get out a lot strictly to look for antlers. Normally, I'll be out hiking or something like that.

Depends on which secret spot I go to.. The majority of the time I will pack out an arm load each time. I try to watch where they are dropping in the winter so I can beat the guys on the hill :)
It seems whenever I take my dirt bike I always find them laying on the road and have to maneuver holding them and driving back home about 5 miles. Gets a bit tricky... (Many wrecks caused by antlers getting stuck in the spokes!)
You have to keep an eye on where the bulls and bucks are wintering so your not looking in areas where there animals haven’t even been
Good luck!
Moose are getting ready to shed here. Cant wait..

lol

No offense but I would love to watch that. A cyclist trying to control the bike while carrying an armful or two of antlers....and especially when one gets caught in the spokes!

Of course, that is strictly hoping that nothing serious comes of it (injuries, falling on antlers, etc) :>/

Maybe try different ways to find them. Do you zig zag back and forth??? I do a LOT of that. Also i try to walk slow and watch everywhere. See something that might be an antler but not sure? Check it out anyways. Use your bino's to find sheds, but i have never glassed up sheds before with mine :-k i always see them before i get the bino's up, and like AntlersOutWest said, " find where they are wintering", That will help a lot! Good luck. Hope you find a armful your next trip! :thumb

A good hint and a place I have collecgted the majority is to look for the low drainages and slopes that the animals travel on. If animals are waling there, a good chance that the antlers wil be there

Thanks guys for the tips. Hopefully i find more this coming spring, and AOW that would be cool to find some moose sheds. Ive only found one set cause i dont even know where the moose are this time of year and know nothing about them. So they really shed this early?

Get in an area that has animals during shed time and do a LOT of glassing on the hill sides.
They mostly inhabit the south facing slopes in the spring because they are usually free of snow or at least not as deep and can get at feed better.
Study the ground through your bono's or spotter VERY slowly and don't miss anything!

Don't forget to do the online course this year and get your permit before going out in the early part of the season!! :thumb
