All right comrades... here's my question: I have a three & a half day kitchen pass for my muzzleloader hunt, how long would you wait before taking a "freezer buck?"
I plan on holding out and hunting hard the first couple days. We've seen some good 3 & 4 pt bucks, so I'd love to cross paths with one early on and not have to worry about this. However, I know that pressure in the area will greatly increase Friday afternoon becasue of the cabins and once the parade of people begins we typically see very little, even away from the roads.
I'm thinking if I have a nice easy shot on a "freezer buck" Friday morning I'd take it.

1: if your wanting a "meat buck" a spike/fork is going to weigh anywhere from 50 to 80 lbs- skinned and hanging at the butcher shop, your going to get less than half of that in meat.
SO for 30-40 lbs of meat, it's not really cost effective--
BUT, if your out there to enjoy hunting AND enjoy HARVESTING, heck yea- if you get a crack at a legal buck, take him! theres nothing wrong with that .
people go through phases intheir hunting life, and it's completly up to you. i doubt i'll ever be as excited as i was when i killed my very first 2x2 buck, that was awsome- i also boubt i'll ever feel a sence of accomplishment as i did on my first big buck- (165") that was awsome too.
no matter what you decide, just make sure to have fun while your out there!
If you've seen plenty of big deer in that area, it might not be a bad idea to pass on a small buck on the opener and wait it out. I hope you (and myself) can tag out early and not have to worry about it!
