hunting in NE Wyoming

Hi, Im new to this site, I have some questions about hunting in Wyoming. Im from Ohio and never hunted anywhere else. Im going on a muley/whitetail hunt next nov. in NE wyoming. Not sure exactly where but somewhere north of Devils Tower on private land. Any tips on hunting in that area? Im used to sitting in a tree stand so this will all be new to me. Also what cal. rifle will I need? Will a 243 do? Ive only hunted deer with a bow and a shotgun, never a rifle. Id appreciate any advice. thanks Barry

::wel to Muley Madness.

Are you going with an outfitter?

You stated you were going to be hunting on private land but you did not know exactly where yet.

Some stand hunting is down along river bottoms in the North East also common is to sit on top of large hay bales. This what I did a few few years ago while hunting whitetails in North Eastern Wyoming and it worked well.

Most of the whiteatails I have hunted in Wyoming were on crop fields along the river bottoms or in the cotton woods in the river bottoms. Mulies were usually in the wide open.

A .243 will work for mule deer and whitetails make sure you use a well constructed hunting bullet. A 25-06 or 270 would be my choice but anything bigger is also fine. If you have one you cant go wrong with the ole 30-06.

No there is no outfitter, Im told there is a river that runs through the property and thats where the whitetails hang out. Thats about as much as I know right now,

Burdman welcome. I broke into Western hunting on a private ranch in NE WY. Hunted the same ranch for many years. From high spots we could easily see Devils Tower to the South. The river your going to be on, likely is the Belle Fourche. Your going to be close to the same area we hunted. Mostly White Tail in that country. I'd say about 75% WD. Plenty of Mules however. Great Ponderosa Pine hill country with the Cottonwood and Ash river bottoms and coulees. I enjoyed the walk and stalk type hunting. Watching trails and feeding areas from hillsides works well. Your 243 will work fine with a well placed shot. Good Hunting!

Wayne, thanks for the reply. I would much rather wald and stalk than sit all day. What do the deer there feed on, are there alot of crop fields in that area?

Most of the ranchers have hay fields. And some grain. Deer use these fields a lot at dawn and dusk. Bedding back in the hills and wooded draws. Still hunting does work real well in that country.

Any of those calibers will do. The main thing is what ever you use, take it to the range as much as possible find the load you like best and stick with it.Let your barrel cool between shots. The first shot out of a cold barrel is always a little different than the rest and is usually the only shot you get at a whitetail. If you set up close to to private land stay well back. I shot a whitetail in 04 with a 30-06 180 gr boattip (which is the only rifle I ever hunt with) it ran over 600yrds with no heart. Good luck and posts some picks I'd like to see that part of the country.
